Remember that even if there is a new OS released, the Netflix app won't actually be a part of that, it's a separate download like some of the other features.

    *speculation*
I wonder whether 1080p will be offered exclusively to Playstation Plus members?

There is precedent for these shenanigans with Sony:
The "High Velocity Bowling" game only offers PS Move support for their Plus subscribers at this time.

Missed it the first time.....now see in the announcement that it's referred to as a "native app", which will be available for download.

Is the game you mentioned a Sony product or third party?? I'd be highly pissed if I'm paying Netflix for service, they upgrade their service and then Sony steps in and prevents me from using that service on their hardware without a payment to them.

Would only convince me to dump the Sony hardware for another platform. For example.......when I wanted to do Blu-Ray and Netflix streaming in other rooms of my home....I didn't go out and buy more PS3's. I bought Netflix capable Blu-Ray players with built in wifi.....MUCH cheaper.

It appears to be San Diego Studio which is a part of Sony Computer Entertainment.

Still would be better than Microsoft, they require a paid Live subscription to get Netflix at all. Not that I'd be happy having to be a Plus member to get 1080i, though I can see it being a temporary exclusive, like they get access to the movies a few weeks before non Plus members. But I'm not expecting it.

Downloaded the new app on my PS3 and tried it out.......YES!!!!

Seems like more stuff is available in HD and the HD looks VERY good. Don't know what's up but........when using the disc for Netflix my system would switch the output to the TV back and forth between 480p-SD and 720p-HD depending on what the show was provided in.......now the PS3 locks it's output at 1080p and stays there.

So....looks like even the stuff that's NOT in HD is upconverted to 1080p. Programming I've checked this morning looked GREAT in HD, and SD stuff looked VERY good, much better than it did. So far I think stuff is streamed in OAR too.

I did see a smattering of DD5.1 on programming, but not as much as I would have liked. Even some very recent TV shows are still being streamed in 2-channel stereo instead of the DD5.1 they were broadcast in.....a couple movies that I would have expected DD5.1 were still in 2 channel stereo.....

Overall.........GREAT work for FINALLY getting this going for us.....

After finding few titles available for streaming in DD5.1, I also made another "discovery".....

Don't know if everyone is seeing this, or just me (since there are at least 4 different Netflix apps out there being used)......but, even titles that show as being available in DD5.1 aren't actually played that way unless you change the audio settings from the default of 2 channel stereo to DD5.1 before you play the program.......
