I'm in the market to upgrade to a 1 TB External Hard Drive over the summer so I can actually keep some of my shows complete season runs. Any recommendations?

If you can settle for 750GB then the following has been rock solid:

    Seagate 750GB DB35 (ST3750840SCE) with Rosewill RX353-S eSATA External Enclosure (w/fan).

Some have Drive for under $300 (search for ST3750840SCE).

Enclosure under $40 (search Rosewill RX353-S).

I trust the Seagate drive. 5 year warranty and quiet. Designed for DVR.

I've got a Seagate 750GB (ST3750640AS) in a noname enclosure and I can second the opinion that the drives are quiet. I picked mine up on eBay, assembled into the enclosure, for just under $200. Been running two weeks now, and so far no problems at all.

I put a 750 gb Seagate Barracuda ES ST3750640NS in an AZiO ENC311SU31 e-sata enclosure in early March. It's quiet (no fan) cool and has not had any problems at all. Cost was a little over 300 in March but the drives have come down since then. If your stuck on a TB I'd go with a RAID 0 with twin 500's or what the heck 1.5tb with twin 750's (my next set up)

1.5TB that should work. Sounds like I'll be saving up. Thanks

Be sure to search the forum for hard dive expansion ect. I remember reading about some folks putting together RAIDS with 1 TB + capacities. They were a big help when I put mine together.

    Cheers

In one of those threads, at one point, Earl mentioned that there was a company he knew of who was working on an external solution for the HR20. Whoever the company is, the product was supposed to blend in with the rest of your A/V equipment... At that point, it was one of those "coming soon to a home theater near you", with very little detail, and I've not seen or heard anything since, though I've been meaning to ask Earl if he had any more information on said product.....

Not sure price wise how it lines up, but because all my equipment is on an open rack next to the TV, asthetics are a big consideration when I get ready to add on... Basically, whatever I put up there has to get the approval of the "boss". :) Fortunately, that isn't always a bad thing. When we bought our TV several years ago, I was going to buy a 44" off brand at Circuit city because it was on sale... When the wife saw it, she quickly vetoed it and said "That TV is ugly. That sony over there is pretty though, buy it"... So, I HAD to spend a few more bucks to get the 46" Sony instead...

Any idea if SATA port activity is on the list for D* in the future? By this I mean that this port is fully activated so the built in HDD and and external HDD can work together instead of one or the other.

    The HR20 is a computer.

It is like a serioulsy hobbled PC/Mac.

It has all of the elements, but it is crippled by something.

What OS are these folks using?

Why should the concept of adding a hard drive be such a big deal?

It runs a version of Linux...Adding a hard drive is easy, you plug in a eSATA drive and it wokrs. But allowing multiple drives to seamlessly act as one big drive is not as easy. It would have to dynamically allow adding more space to a volume group. Which if it isnt configured that way to start, would cause you to lose all the data on the original drive....boy I can see the support calls if that were to happen and Joe SixPack wasnt up to snuff on how it worked.

When you use an external drive with the HR20 does it still give you the amount of disc space available? Just curious.

Does the HR20 has a BIOS like a computer system? If so, does the installed BIOS allow for multiple HDDs?
