I think the Ford Escape Hybrid has a V6 gas engine along with the electric. It can be had in 2WD and 4WD versions. Ford licenced the hybrid electronics from Toyota but uses Ford-built engines.

Another good option would be the Volkswagen Jetta TDI. It has a direct-injection Diesel engine that, using new technology, doesn't have the "clatter" you normally associate with Diesels, has good low-end torque for off-the-line acceleration, and gets 38 city/46 highway mileage.

Bogy, do some more research before you buy that hybrid. Winter mileage will suffer, batteries aren't as efficient in cold weather. City mileage is higher than rural milage, the faster you go the more the gas engine runs. Make sure it's a good fit before you spring for one.

The TDI's are a big consideration since diesel fuel is cheaper and the gas mileage is almost as good as the hybrids.

I know for me,, the main consideration is the mileage and the space of a small suv. I live about 1 mile from work,, and we use Donna's Escape for the weekend traveling because my old beast ( 87 F150) gets about 5 to 10 mpg. I can keep it around parked long side of the road for yard work and use the new Hybrid for travel to work. That short of distance is okay for the battery,, an occasional jaunt to the city of Indy on the weekend to rev out the engine and we should be set. Diesel is cheaper now but depending on where you live,, you will need a heater for the engine so it doesnt gum up (notice I didnt say freeze),, diesel gums up at low temps so here in Indiana,, you need it plugged in. I have checked savings and for normal user,, diesel though cost effective for hauling is not for a normal commuter.

It is a 16 valve, 2.3 liter, Atkinson Cycle, 4 cylinder engine. With the combination of the gas engine and the electric motors it accelerates like a 6 cylinder.

I know someone who already has a Prius and loves it. I am more interested in the Escape because my wife has been driving our 6 cylinder F150 and loves the height but doesn't get real excited about putting gas in it or trying to park it. We've driven a regualar Escape and she loved the handling. At 6'5" I even had enough leg and headroom. I've got at least 3 or 4 months before they would even be available, and I'll have lots of time to spend on the computer here in just a few weeks. :D :p

Have they priced them yet? I would hate to spend $30k+ on a small SUV. I think hybrids ought to (since I get chewed out for saying outta by Nick) be cheaper.

I have not seen a firm price yet, but a 2 to 4 thousand dollar premium over a regular Escape is what is being speculated. Figure it out, if gas was a buck a gallon, it wouldn't make sense from an economic standpoint. $2 a gallon is about what I figure the economic breakpoint is, depending on whether its closer to 2 or 4 thousand. However much gas goes up from here on just makes it a better deal. You can also figure every one of these will be optioned to the max for at least the first year. They are going to sell all they make, so you won't find any bargains on these. Don't figure on finding a 2 wheel version, I am sure every one of them will be the all wheel drive, which is very nice.

About a month ago truck drivers blocked intersections and walked out of their trucks to protest has gas prices but the pigs made arrests and say this is not the way solve your problems.Well a made a point earlier if people would ban together stop paying the IRS,Dont buy gasoline,Block traffic and Speed 80MPH on highways im talking about everybody what are the cops gonna do about it?Think about it theyre arent enough jails to put everybody in.Just like speeding If everyone went 80MPH what are cops gonna do about it? Cant stop everybody. This is a totaly a differant america than it was 200 years ago.People back then didnt tolerate the british being here or they didnt tolerate king george tax laws.Colonel americans fought to kick the british off our land and declared it free.Todays americans just tolerate the way the laws are and and just go along with it instead of fighting and do something about it.
It would help if all of you send my message to everyones e-mail and all of you send it to your friends and tell their friends send this e-mail message and maybe we might have enough people to fight back and take back our country from the liberal politicians and we might bring back the real america!

Huh every one already does that. I rountinly drive in excess of 85-90MPH on the Interstates mostly out of survival. I am afraid that if I drive the speed limit some one will barrel into to the back of me.

My buddy got pulled over doing 90 in a 65 zone. As the cop was pulling us over people were flying by. My freind dismayed asked the cop about the other people speeding by and what the cop was going to do about it. The cop asked my friend if he had ever been fishing. My freind replied yes of course I have. Then the cop asked him if he caught all the fish. My freind had to think about and never quite got the joke.

Why didnt you just keep on going? You know the fish doesnt stop when you caught him. When your fish hooks on your line he`s gonna keep pulling it away.So you should do the same?He puts on his flashing lights you keep on going. The fish doesnt stop when you catch him and why should you allow the cop to catch you huh? Think about it.

I filled up today, I just couldn't resist, most gas stations around here are ~$2.15 or higher for regular, one of the gas stations I pass was $2.03, I had a little less then a quarter of a tank left and decided to fill up. Since I wouldn't be out that way until Friday and I'd need gas before then. Total bill was $40, for about 19 1/4 gallons. First time I ever paid over $2 a gallon. And this couldn't have happened at a better time, but some how my truck is getting much better mileage. I used to go 230 miles and have a quarter of a tank, today was my first fill up in 307 miles. For the past month I've been close to 300 miles in-between fill ups, today was the first time I went over.

That is the most stupidest thing I have ever read. Well except for some of the pro bush stuff on this site. You think about it flashing lights he does not stop it becomes a chase then when it's over you have ten cops beating you with night sticks.

Because the fish doesn't have a wife, three kids, a beemer and a mortgage big enough to choke a sperm whale. That's why.

...and that's after you've been seriously killed in the crash and resulting huge explosion of that 18-wheeler carrying a load of C4.

Yeah did those cops ever learn what happend during the rodney king verdict? They went on a rampage and half of LA was burned down because of it.The Jury in cincinatti better find the cops guilty for killing a black man after the black man sufferd a heart attack during the arrest or cincy will be another LA night riots.

Filled up the gas can this afternoon. It's only a 1 gallon can, so it only cost me around $1.85 for a little less than 1 gallon of gas. My wife will be filling up her vehicle this evening.

What are you 12 years old? Take a look at my signature and take a guess at what my occupation is. I deal with retards like yourself every day. Young piss ants all full of piss and vinegar ready to take on the law instead of standing up and being a man and taking responsability for your actions and being a productive member of society. I tremble with fear at the knowledge I'm going to need you to pay my social security.

Well said, Cooper. His comments are wrong on so many levels.

Either this clown 'Stevox' is a complete idiot, or he's pulling our leg. I tend to think the former is closer to the truth. His profile says he was born in '62 which would make him around 42 years old, but the way he writes and what he says would peg his mental age at around 15 going on 12.
