Is it correct that a C-31 can only function only as an HR-34 client - it can't connect directly to a dish and function as a non-DVR receiver?

That is correct it has no tuner and is useless without an HR34.

I guess more precisely you could say the C31 has no "satellite" RF tuner in it. :)

But like satellite receivers with internal DECAs it does have an RF tuner for DECA signals which AIUI nowadays operate on DIRECTV's assigned MoCA "E" band. Any one of 5 overlapping channels with center frequencies between 500-600 MHz.

That's 50 MHz (± 25 MHz) bandwidth per channel at 25 MHz per step under the MoCA 1.1 standard.

I guess that's why the response curve for the DECA BSF is between 475-625 MHz then.
