Can AIM meters be used by amateurs?

    Hi Everyone,

We have a property in an incredibly remote area that professional installers won't go to. We setup a low def directv dish a few years ago and had it working well. Now with the new high def directv dish we installed we can't get local channels. Have tried for hours to get it dialed in but no luck (read everything I could...got it plum, etc.). I'm willing to take the plunge and buy a used AIM meter for a few hundred bucks if it will help me get it dialed in (I don't have any other options at this point) but want to make sure it doesn't require an access code only pro installers can get, and also that it is something that is intuitive to use and I'll be able to figure out.

    Any thoughts?

Are you using a a 3LNB -the reason you may not be getting locals could be based on you location -Needing a 5LNB to get to the 119 for your locals. -3LNB 99-101-103 - 5 LNB 99-101-103-110-119

Since you live in a very remote place, you might not get locals.
Try this link, type in your zip code and see what it shows.

Thanks for the tip. This is the part you I show what a rookie I am on this stuff. I'm using SL3K4NR0-02. Does that tell you if i'm using the 3LNB instead of the 5LNB?

Appreciate the tip. Our cabin is actually in Canada (very close to the border) so I can't make the zip code tool work. There are 20+ other houses next door to ours that get all the channels on Directv so I do know it's possible even though we are technically across the border.

Put in the zip code that is just south of you across the border and see what it says.

I wouldn't spend "a few hundred bucks" just for one install, first get a sat where is your local reside from Gary Toma spreadsheet (using ZIP for nearest city at US side of closest border)
    - post signal level matrix for each page on STB setup (easy to make photos)

The SL3 in the part number tells you it is a 3LNB. Does it have 1 connection for a coax or 4 ?

If it has 4 connections you need one of these on each coax connected to the receiver. An HD would need 1 and a DVR would need 2. If the locals are in HD and what I am seeing is correct. This will probably fix you up.

    if he has H25...
"That is a legacy ka/ku lnb, meaning it's not a swm type. The H25 receiver only works on a swm setup."

The zipcode thing isn't an option. On Vancouver Island and there isn't land do the south of us as we are west of the U.S.

I definitely want to keep exploring the options everyone is throwing out but would also love thoughts on my original question about the AIM meter and if they are easy to use / need some kind of access code / password I can't get without being a professional installer. At this point, if I can make the problem go away for 300 bucks using a used AIM meter it wouldn't be the end of the world.

Will reply to other suggestions as well.

    Use the zip for Seattle.

What receiver are you trying to hook up ?

Please verify that you have 4 coax connections.

A meter is not going to do you any good until you have the proper connections for your receiver. I have never used a meter.

I believe we have both options but were using the one with only 1 coax connection when we did the tuning and got everything except for local channels.

If you are using just 1 do you have a Power Inserter in the coax line ?

So, you are getting HD channels, just not locals ?

From this spreadsheet, unless I am not correct,
The locals in Seattle are all SD. Note: the 101 satellite only does SD programs.

Thanks--this is interesting. If I use one with 4 connections, why do I need these (not questioning you, just trying to learn and understand as I go)? Do I need one if I only have 1 connection?

And to install, can you give me a bit more detail on where they plug-in exactly? We only have one receiver box up there currently if that helps simplify things.

Thanks! Does this mean I can't get them with an HD Dish / receiver or that they only show up on the low def channels when I look for them on the receiver? I can't get either. My neighbor 30 feet away gets the locals with the same exact dish.

Quick caveat: I don't have pictures of all the equipment i'm using up there and will frustrate you guys in a hurry since you can't troubleshoot very well with me saying "I think I have a ....". My parents will be up there in a few days and I'll have better info to share. However...

Yes, I used some kind of SWM power amplifier thing-a-ma-jigger (sorry to get all technical on you). Is that what you are asking or is it something different? And yes, getting HD channels just not locals.
