Can D* really get me a HR24?

I've been with D* since the 90's, and I sent them an e-mail about swapping out my trusty HR20-700 with a HR24. They replied with the following:

Thanks for writing. I see you've been with us for many years and I would like to let you know that we appreciate your business.

I completely understand your concern regarding offsetting purchase price. Please note that the purchase price will not be offset. As technology becomes more advanced, leasing allows us to provide the latest equipment with minimal upfront cost to the customer. The upgrade fees allow us to keep our monthly lease fees low. Many leased items require an upfront payment as well as monthly fees.

After reading your email and reviewing your account I see that you are eligible for a discounted equipment upgrade. Since you have been a valuable DIRECTV customer we can give you an HR24 receiver at $99.

    ---------------------

Can D* really guarantee me a HR24? I've seen folks here saying "no", but this e-mail would seem to indicate that the HR24 was a sure thing. (I'm OK with the $99)

    What do you think?

    Thanks!

They've done this sort of thing for me many times in the past.

I was told several times by different people that they have no way to tell or specify which HR2x model you will receive.

Its a lie. Get it at a store and then ask Directv for the credit they are offering you. That way you know you are getting it for sure.

Actually that's the exact opposite order of what a person should do!

    1. First call them and tell them you want to ensure you get an HR24, then have them to agree and notate the account for a credit of $199+tax to be credited to your account balance upon activation of the receiver.

    2. Call back and have the next CSR read the notes to you confirming that the notes are infact there.

    3. Then and only then go out and buy or order a receiver.

    4. Activate the receiver by calling in and have the notated credit applied to your account.

    5. Log in to your online account and you should see the credit immediately.

*I just did this for 2 HR24s and paid ZERO out of pocket after taking into account the credits they issued!

I just upgraded to a dvr yesterday (Tuesday). I never mentioned any model number to the csr nor did I order mrv so I figured I'd end up with a refurbished unit. When the installer showed up yesterday he brought in a new HR24-500 receiver. Even though I've been with Directv since 1994, I doubt that had anything to do with it, just lucky I guess.

So now installers come just for DVR swaps? Or were they there for another reason?

Wish that would have happened for me. Just had to replace my HR22 and they sent me a refurbished HR20-700.

Wrote to Ellen Filiapak(sp?) and got a phone call on sunday to discuss my concern.

They are sending me either a HR-22 or HR24 if it is available in the warehouse. I am expecting an HR22 but maybe I will get lucky.

I just had an Hr20-700 die on me. They sent me an HR21-200 as a replacement and I'm fine with that. All the units do the same thing so there's no reason to throw a fit and demand an HR24.

Runner - Many have reported that the HR24 is significantly faster than the other HR's. There is a difference.

I've gotten what they've promised me, IF you do a self install to swap. If you have a tech come out they may not, unless DirecTV stipulates a particular STB on the workorder.

I would prefer the HR20 to the HR22.

Absolutely. My HR20s were somewhat faster than my HR21. And the HR24 is significantly faster than either of those.

I did call DirecTV recently and they ended up swapping one of my HR21s for an HR24 for free. I really don't know if they specified shipping me an HR24 or it was just the first one that the shipping department grabbed.

I'm not sure. I offered to do it myself but the csr and her supervisor insisted on sending out an installer. The installer did do a minor tweak on my dish but I did not ask for that in my request. Three weeks ago I did a self swap for my parents so I did not understand why they insisted on sending out an installer for me, either way, it all worked out fine.

Oh I know, I have an HR24. It's just not worth throwing a hissy fit over. All of the other DVR's have the same features so there's no need to waste my time, and DirecTV's time, by refusing a DVR until I get an HR24.

I called yesterday and said I was a long time happy sub, and I would like a HR24 to swap out with my original HR20-700.
I asked for a purchase offset (I have been given these in the past when I got an R22).
The CSR put me on hold for a LONG time and came back and said she could give me a discount on a DVR from them, but she couldn't promise what I would get.
She also said she could NOT give me a purchase offset like I had gotten in the past!
Now I love D*, but this is the first time EVER, they have not given me what I asked for or MORE.
    Very odd and disappointing.

    :(:(:(:(:(
