Can I cancel service if DTV sent me a genie mini but not activated yet?

Sorry if this has been asked before but I have searched and can't find this same scenario. I have a problem with a hr24 and DTV is sending a genie mini as a replacement. I don't need to go into the story behind this, I did want the genie mini as a replacement, but since DTV is sending me a genie mini, can I cancel my service prior to me activating the new equipment (which would start a new 2 year commitment), or since they are sending me equipment am I obligated to activate it thus starting the 2 year commitment?

    Thank you!
    Tom

    Welcome to the Forum:
I would think that the time starts after it has been activated. Do not take it out of the box or activate it until you are sure what you can or can not do.

Do you have a Genie to connect it to ?

Do you know when the contract date you have ? now is ending ?

Yes, I have a Genie to connect it to. In fact, I have another genie mini on another TV.

I am not sure what the contract date was, but my contract is over - unless I activate the new genie mini.

Maybe refuse it when it's delivered?

Can't see why you would have a problem as long as you don't activate the mini, but that's being rational. One way or the other, you're gonna have to call them and that's when rationality goes out the window. If your scenario is not in a script they're liable to tell you anything.

I just looked at the online Customer Summary from my order that I think has the answer under AGREEMENTS & EARLY TERMINATION FEES (ETF) :

Existing customers who elect to have new or upgraded equipment shipped to them: You have accepted a 12 MO PROGRAMMING AGREEMENT. If you decide to cancel your service early or do not maintain your base level programming, you will be charged an Early Termination Fee of $10 per month for each month remaining on your 12 month contract (up to $120).

So it appears I have a 1 year commitment now. However, it is only 1 year and not too expensive to get out of if I so decide.

    Thanks for your help.

Just don't activate it - call Directv and tell them you changed your mind and want to return it because you don't want a contract extension. They'll take it back. Of course if you want to cancel you can do that too, but if you are only thinking about canceling to avoid extending your commitment that only happens when you activate the mini.

This is accurate When I installed my HS17 from Solid Signal in August my contract agreement email was the same after it was activated, 1 year agreement and 10 bucks a month if i cancelled

Back before ATT if you replaced a broken HR24 no new contract needed but an upgrade H24 to HR24 was a one year. One more reason not to use Directv

If you replaced a broken receiver then no new contract
If you added a receiver or upgraded one to say a DVR then you get a new contract
