,,, to a friends house to watch one f my recorded programs without it being connected to a dish. Otherwise that's the only way I see to capture a program and show it at a friends house??

I forget the answer, but you can disconnect your device from the satellite right now and see if it works for recorded shows. Unplug the power first so it will have to restart just like it will when you take it to a friend's house.

Why not just have your friend come to your house and watch it there. Or is your friend not welcome at your house?

I don't see any reason why that would not work. Once the coax is disconnected I don't think there's any way the HR can be seen by the GPS monitoring system.

I turned on an old deactivated HR20-700 a few weeks ago and played the content on its Playlist. Been many years since it was deactivated. Many years. Not a month.

We had a thread here about this monitoring system a year or so ago. Let me see if I can find the thread. Don't even remember what it's called. Found it. Here's a link: D* Now dependent on IP address when moving locations?

I have no idea what impact that monitoring system would have in this case but it was the only thing I could think of that would/might prohibit the TS from doing what he wants.

Not GPS but geo-location by IP.

It would need the HR-54 to be connected to the internet either ethernet or wirelessly. If the internet was not enabled on the HR-54 it could not call home and say I am at a friends house.

As I said, I had no idea if that would affect what the TS wants to do. I see no reason he can't do that. But you are right, the HR should not be connected to anything other than the TV to play it on.

If this helps: I used to vacation in Ocean City, Maryland every year and on a couple occasions I took a loaded HR with me and had no issues playing any content. I haven't done that in several years, easier to carry a streaming box with me.
