A few days ago, I searched for "NBA" (preseason basketball is here!) to record some games. One game was listed on multiple channels, so I just picked one to record. (I'm relatively new, and am just learning some of the channel numbers.)

Yesterday when I went to play the game, I got a (721) not authorized. When I go to my Channel Guide, and select Channels I Get - it is listed there.

I called yesterday and talked to a guy, he sent something to the receiver and asked me to reboot it. I had something recording at that time, so I told him I would reboot when in wasn't recording. That happened last night.

Today, I had another instance just like this, and again the channels shows as one that I get.

My issue is - why is there a Favorite called "Channels I Get" that includes channels that I do not get.

My call today lasted for about 45 minutes, and there was no resolution. No one seemed to know why, or anything about it. There was no offer to look into the issue. Basically, "Sorry, there is nothing we can do about it."

The channels that I'm having issues with are in the 6xx range. I actually get some of them, but most I do not. I do not subscribe to any sports package other that what should be coming in my local regional sports group.

    Thoughts?

Sadly, the Channels I get should have been named Channels I can get if I pay more.
I think all of us when we are new find this out in the first few days like you just did.

There is an All Channels list and a Channels I Get list.

When I was with E*, there program guide defaulted to Channels I Get, and you had to select All Channels to see what you didn't get.

Why would they have this if it doesn't work?

Yes, I know that I can create my own Favorites list (there are two available. With E* you could have four,) but why should I have to do that when the option is there?

When I search for a basketball game, and the search lists multiple channels, how would I know which channels are active and which are not without going to the channel to check it each time?

I realize I'm probably preaching to the choir, but I don't understand why it is "ok" to have something on your system that doesn't work as it should.

It's not OK... but it's the way it is.

Supposedly, after many years, it's supposed to be fixed by the end of the year. We've seen improvements in the last month (or so)... hopefully the rest will be here shortly...

Channels I get does work for the most part. It just has a hard time with the regional sports networks, and some of the channels that were added since the last time they worked on it.

Evidently when they add new channels to the line-up whomever is in charge of adding them doesn't bother updating the Channels I Get feature when they do so. Personally I think DirecTV should implement a rule that this is done when the channels go live, but evidently DirecTV doesn't think that is a very high priority. Afterall, the vast majority of people I know with the service don't bother changing the guide away from All channels anyway, the only time it gets set to channels I get is if the installer did it when they installed everything. None of my friends have ever bothered to set up their own custom favorites lists, most don't even know that they can. I usually tell them about it and end up doing it for them when I visit.

During the Viacom negotiations, the Encore channels were offered free to customers, and they haven't shown up correctly since.

There's been some channel moves that have caused previously correct channels to be shown incorrectly.

    Etc., etc., etc... :(

I know, there is definitely room for improvement. I'm just saying it's like 80-90% correct, which is a passing grade where I'm from

Some people seem to act like it's more wrong than it is right, I'm just pointing out that isn't really the case.

Anyway, I say who cares. I don't use it anyway other than to start creating my custom lists. I go in tell it to add all channels I get, and then go back through and take out all the channels that it is wrong about, and all the channels I don't want showing up like the shopping networks, PPV etc. Then I don't have to mess with any of it for months at a time.

I'd give up channels I get completely if I could get something like the ability to clone favorites list across my whole home network, or ability to store them on the DirecTV website and then download them to a receiver.

I definitely use a FAV almost all the time. I get over 200 channels plus premiums of HBO, SHO, Starz and Encore.
My FAV has only 82 channels in it. I don't watch SD programming at all.

From the 00s to most of the 400s, it's mostly correct. From the 500s up, it's hit and miss. The 500s recently got a lot of help when the HBO channels were fixed. The 600s/700s are ridiculous...

I clear all when making custom lists... saves time.

A lot of other features use CIG than just the Guide. That's where it gets irritating to me... otherwise, I wouldn't think much of it since I'm a custom list user.

Not only does channels I get not work perfectly, searching will always?/sometimes list channels you don't get. You have to learn what channels you get. Without sports pack no soccer channels and very limited out of region sports. If you pay for the sports pack you will get the 2 soccer channels and all the college sports on the regional channels.

If you want professional sports outside your area you have to pay for that package seperate NBA game plan, NFL sunday ticket etc. (preseason games not near as restricted). So if you had the sports pack that nba preseason game probably would have recorded. Dish does have a better favorites list system.

Coming from E*, and having receiver(s) that fed two TV's from one receiver, there was an option to "Copy TV1 settings to TV2." There were also options to hide all PPV and/or Adult from the guide.

Also, you could back up your settings to your remote control (called System Wizard.) This was very, very helpful when you had to swap a receiver. It remembered your timers, lists, favorites, and most all of your personalized settings. Could swap out a receiver and have everything back exactly as it was before in about an hour.

If only there were a way to take the good from E* and D*, run it through a blender and have something awesome pour out when done!! If they were to ever merge, we'd probably end up like Danny Di Vito in "Twins"! :)

I don't necessarily want them (don't want to pay any extra,) I just want to see what is available when I search. For example, if I search for "NBA basketball", then why would I want to see what it on channels that I don't get. Why should I have to know all the channels that I receive. That's part of my issue with this. I choose "Channels I get," tell it to search, and it returns stuff on channels I don't get.

If I want that kind of aggravation, I have an ex-girlfriend that I can call, and she can find something to give me grief about!

The "Genie Client" has a similar setting...

You can hide all adult channels from the guide (search, etc) with DirecTV as well. It's in the parental controls...

I used to have dish hd dvr's. I can go on and on about things in their software I don't like as much as directv. Like one button recording. Pretty much everybody here wants directv search software and channels I get to work "better". But it doesn't. And it has been working this way for years. Many years. So my comments are to help you deal with how it works now. They are not going to copy dish software exactly. They are #1. They don't have to. You'll get used to how it works. Every brand is different. I have 7 hd dvr's(hr20) now for many years. Record 50 shows every week. Wore out a lot of remotes, but not one box failure yet!

There is a Parental Control" section in your menus where you can set the rating and set up a password.

Is it possible you were recording a channel you do get, but the game was on another channel at that time (local or ESPN?)

Right. I have no idea what the actual issue and fix is, but we've been told it's more complex than we think, and has nothing to do with the software on our boxes. Considering the oddities I've seen just in terms of the package comparisons in the past (like saying I didn't have access to the 101/Audience Network) I don't have much reason to doubt it.

Even more annoying is to go through the pain of setting up a correct list and then realizing that you have to do it on every receiver.
Months later, channels will disappear. When an SD is replaced with an HD, the custom list simply drops both.
There's a lot of room for improvement.
