I didn't have the sound up very high for that game, so I didn't notice it. Also, being a preseason game, the crowd noise isn't very loud during much of the programming. Seeing that the game was on espn, it doesn't surprise me. Seems to be a problem that exists exclusively on espn and tnt sports. Didn't notice it on any of the network olympic coverage, but there were no crowds. It was not a part of the abc ,nba fnals coverage , so that tells me it's something that is being created in certain networks' audio compression for live sports. Not holding my breath that it gets fixed anytime soon. Particularly if it is only a problem on directv transfers....

Yea it was there. If you watch college football on ABC and ESPN I started noticing it last year on DTV. I have OTA too...I'll have to see if it's noticeable on there as well on ABC. Never noticed on NBC or CBS ever. Crazy but some of the national broadcasts on local FM sports station you can hear it as well (not sure what national broadcast company). So annoying once you hear it. It's almost impossible not to notice it. I do like hearing (some) announcers, crowd, band, etc. so turning sound down sucks for me. Would be nice if more viewers that noticed would speak up. I did search for this online and there was a twitter feed regarding. But not really much.

It is surprising that few people either notice, or follow through with complaining about this online. You are correct, once you notice it, you really can't not notice it. It's happening on espn ,US open right now. When the underdog rune makes a big shot , you can hear it in the peaking crowd noise. It's possible that people are so distracted when view nowadays,(texting, checking fantasy football news, answering emails, and sending insulting political memes) , That they are barely tuned in enough to even notice a strange audio compression problem. It only happens on sports broadcasts, and not on every network.

I too have noticed this only recently watching the US Open on ESPN, whenever the crowd volume elevates. It’s like a low
Level London police siren. Annoying. May check with other tv. I’ve tried cutting off soundbar and using tv sound only and playing with various tv sound options…nothing changed it.

That's a perfect description of it, and no nothing can change it. It was present during surges of crowd noise throughout the u.s. open on espn. I'm not sure if it was evident during replays of matches on espn2. Forgot to check. I've kind of given up looking for solutions at this point. I generally just keep the tv turned down during espn sports broadcast that feature crowd noise. I really hope this isn't very noticeable during their upcoming nfl stuff. Kind of negates the point of me having a nice av sound system hooked up when I watch sports.

I'm pretty sure it's espn's cheap way to put a db limiter on crowd noise. If so it's an embarrassingly poor quality attempt on their part. I would love to know if this is only something that can be heard on directv, or if cable subscribers can hear it as well.

I am a cable subscriber w Spectrum…so not only a directv issue. I tried my other tv’s…different brands/different sound bars. Same issue.

    Yeah, it's pretty bad.

The way I would describe it as it sounds to me, is like dueling grinders going after the same piece of tubing, and then that sound being transmitted through the tubing and into an old-style landline telephone handset.

The "pitch" of the "tones" (if you would call them that) lands on my ears similar as maybe a pair of two-cycle gas powered leaf blowers.

Even when the sound of the crowd lowers, I can still perceive a pulsating noise going back and forth.

What in the eff is that?!

You can hear this beeping noise on the Monday Night Football game on ESPN right now. Raiders vs Ravens
Non stop beeping like a garbage truck backing up

I'm glad I'm not going crazy or losing my hearing! I think I started hearing it last year. My wife and son don't seem to be able to hear it. Just as well, like one of you said - once you hear it it's hard to unhear it.
