I normally pay my Comcast bill on line. Today I looked at the bill I received in the mail and there was an added item "Modem Lease" of $5.00. The problem is that I own my modem. I called them on it and the CSR stated that the fee was added in January and that she would remove it and credit back to January. I asked her how it got added and she had no clue. I also asked how many others were getting the same invalid charge and once again, no clue. Any Comcast customers CHECK your printed bill for this charge if you own a modem. Just for fun, if you do show the charge let us know in this thread. I'm curious as to how common this is. I suspect it is VERY common.

    Littleton,...
AT&T just added a "city" tax to my cell bill. I don't live in the city, but in an unincorporated area of the county. AT&T can't tell my why or how it was added. They say they have no control and take it up with the city. :(

I "rent" my modem from Comcast and, as of January 1, the monthly rental fee went from $3 to $5 -- either way, we get screwed. So what else is new?

    Sucks! :bonk1:

You miss the point -- whether you rent or whether you buy, you'll pay (a $5 monthly Comcast charge) for the modem you occupy! Now there's an incentive to rent -- if the modem blows, Comcast will replace it "free of charge."

They said the fee for my owned modem was a "mistake" and I am being credited the fees from January when they added them to my account. Buy one and save the fee. This is just a case of Comcast seeing what they can get away with, nothing more.

Same here... When I first got Comcast, I inquired about purchasing it instead of owning it, but since it was one of the dual phone/internet modems, it could only be leased. Apparently though, that modem was always supposed to be $5/month, yet they were charging people $3/month. In January, the billing issue was discovered and they started charging people the correct amount. That also do now allow you to purchase the dual modem.

My February 26, 2010 bill contained a notice that the next bill would be in a new format. It also contained a two page notice of a proposed class action suit settlement regarding peer-to-peer issues.

Sure enough I'm now being charged the same rate as before but for the nifty XFINITY Internet. The March 26, 2010 bill contained 12 pages including a new 8 page residential agreement.

So far, no modem charge has been added. I'll revisit this thread when the April 26, 2010 bill comes out.

That was one of the reasons I dropped Comcast and went with AT&T DSL. They got me for a few months as well.
