I just got switched to ATT for my Directv account and I need to call them. Is there a number that I call to get past the general number. I used to call a number to go directly to retention and they could handle most problems without spending an eternity on hold. Is there a retention number for ATT?

The number Jimmie gave you gets you to a group of CSRs that are pleasant and try to be helpful but ask them anything technical and you get sent to what ATT laughingly refers to as "tech help". Not pleasant and not very helpful. Good luck.

Thanks, Now that they have switched me to ATT I wonder if I should go with combined billing for my ATT cell and home phone. I've heard some horror stories about combined billing.

ATT removed all bundle discounts for combined billing — any promotion offsets are based on address matching between your DirecTV and mobile service.

The only reason to combine now is if you feel that your current calls to ATT support are too productive and far too short, and you want to improve your “high score” of how many agents and transfers it takes to complete simple requests.

It sounds like things haven't changed. It's bad enough trying to call about my combined home phone and cell service. I called last week about my home phone and they transferred me 5 times before i could find someone to answer a question about my bill.

I called 877-999-1083 because AT&T migrated me to a new account the day after I sent my monthly payment to the old account. I was unaware of the change, and 7 days later I got a 'you missed your payment' e-mail. Only when I contacted them, did I discover that I now had a new account number. The CSR was great and she initiated a transfer request in order to get the money moved from my old account to my new account. It's a three stage process, but it got done......and they did it in an hour. credit where it's due. :)

Those CSRs that you get when you call that number are always helpful and pleasant. Don't be fooled by how well this went. When you have to get something done that is in any way technical you'll be sent to CSRs that don't know what they're doing...you're gonna have a completely different view about ATT CSRs and how well they handle that call. I went thru the same thing and thought the merger caused some good but now I know better.

The 4990 number is the one I called recently to get some (very good) discounts. I have been switched to AT&T.
