Here are the links for the best tips we could compile (From the HD DVR FAQ):

This isn't accurate. I don't have the protection plan and had an HR10 die on me a few months ago and they replaced it with an HR20 for only shipping and handling ($19.99).

A few thoughts because it sounds like you accidentally screwed yourself over.

It can't hurt you to play CSR Roulette, at different times of day, and being really nice each time.

If your bill is directed automatically to a credit card, you can also dispute the charge and get at the problem that way. You may well lose in the end, but it creates more time to try to find a sympathetic CSR or supervisor.

You also might get farther if you buy the HR20 and activate it first, thus showing them that you a) require it, and b) you are still intent on honoring your commitment, you just need the right equipment.

I agree that not being under a commitment give you a big edge. When I called last month I was well out of my last commitment and wanted to upgrade from 2 HR10-250s. I was offered 1 HR20 free and negotiated a 2nd one for program credits. I'm glad I worked out a deal to get two while I was not under a commitment. When my 90 day warranty is up I'll probably add the protection plan for some added insurance.

i just called to check on what I could buy a hddvr for and they told me 299. I got my last one 1 year ago so I know I have another year of contract. So I told her that last time I ordered one they gave me a discount she said that she only had the 299 price but maybe the installation dept might have a different price. She transferred me and I explained the same thing. She offered me free HBO for 6 months and free DVR service and HD service for 6 months (maybe 12 months not sure).
I'll tryback next week and see if I can get any better.

I just ordered one and got the hr20 for $199 and 12 months of free HD service which cost 999 per month. After tax and the free hd my total cost will be $116 dollars. I had to be transfered to the cancelation dept to get this price. She was very nice.

Make sure you do the confirmation steps in the Ordering Tips.

Also, there is a lot that you can do to help insure that you get a great installation: Installation Guide

See the HD DVR FAQ for more info.
