Electronic Design News (EDN) recently ran an article describing the technology inside the DirecTV D11 Receiver, including photos ....

Well, the person should read sometimes here. He is cluless about capability of satellite stream content. :D
The paragraph is totally wrong !
"The analog modem is the means by which the D11-100 periodically "dials home" to download program guide information, firmware, and other updates. That these data streams still come in over POTS is a quaint antiquity in an increasingly broadband-connected LAN and WAN world."

Modem is reporting about your PPV, habits, etc back to the provider, not what written above. ;)

I see a lot of editors/authors make the mistake assuming that everything is downloaded via phone line. That used to be true in the early days, but no longer.

LONG LONG time... way before even the D10 was let out, they stopped the guide data on the phone.

Sorry, but it was never been that way for DTV or E*.
Both providers putting a lot of pressure on customers for keep STB connected to phone line only last years, but never before it was mandatory.

I wondered the same thing. My D11's don't have NTSC OTA tuners, but perhaps some early versions did?

Correct. DIRECTV was only able to download software patches to the set top box via the phone line connection. They never downloaded the complete image this way as it would take too long. That is the reason they changed to upgrading boxes over the air starting around 1999/2000.

    Broken...
I found one at Porter's Camera Store, Earl... here's the link: http://tinyurl.com/ytbkzp

    BTW, it's about $90 there!

Or look at the range of domes and tents available from B&H Photo/Video! http://tinyurl.com/y29yay

    And they start at $45.
