    I appreciate the explanations. :)

This is a dumb question but: Is all the hardware the installer brings you new hardware?

Upgrades are not authorized for SWMs. Doesn't mean that your installer won't use one, but do not expect one. A CSR can not guarentee one. It's really that simple.

Good enough then. I'll probably place the call this week and I suspect barring some terribly bad luck I'll get what I need. :)

That's my concern. I don't want used or refurb gear. I want new gear.

I don't think any installers have "refurbs", but they do come from DirecTV as replacements.

Unfortunately you don't get a guarantee on the stuff from d*. I've gotten 25% refurb and 75% new, and no beat up refurb stuff

I guess I'll have to live with that although a lot of this doesn't sound much different than what the cable companies do.

In my case, my cable company is not a viable option. Their hardware butchers PQ and they get maybe a dozen HD channels?

The refurbs I have seen have not been in service (long) but are repacked. With all electronic stuff, most will work right out of the box. Some never does. Does anyone know of any DTV center or contractor that puts eq on a bench and tests prior to doing anything inside the receiver chassis?

Rolf the IRD tester please call us!

Update: Placed order with DirecTV today for the HD swap upgrade and they'll be out here tomorrow. Wow, that's pretty fast.

Even if you buy your own swm eqipment the tech still might not install it cause he wil fail a qc for improper multiswitch

I'll find out on Tuesday what happens. I had to push the appointment back due to weather issues and some scheduling conflicts on my end.

I didn't buy any gear on the side. I simply went for the HD swap which means the primary HD receiver and dish are "covered" and then I added two additional HD boxes to the order which of course they charged me $99 a pop for like you'd expect.

I'm not expecting any real problems unless they send me someone utterly clueless. The hard work has already been done as of 2005. All these techs really should have to do is a literal dish swap and box swap.

This will NOT be a problem. DirecTV won't supply external SWMs, and won't directly replace them, but they DO *allow* them, and won't fail a tech's install for using a customer-provided SWM.
