Yeah, they were shown on channels 750-756 four years ago, according to this discussion below ....

The Olympic Channels are 2 extra HD feeds for temporary purpose. They have had 7 temporary HD feeds up at one time, and they currently aren't using NBA, NHL, and NFL sports package bandwidth. They can also take down 2 Pay Per View slots, (which is what they do with NFL as well) for the 2 weeks the Olympics are on.

Bandwidth is not the problem, and channel mapping neither, they could put the Olympics on 710 and up.

I'm still not convinced. Everyone seems to be carrying the channels, even U-Verse. I think the CSR's are not being told anything these days till the day it happens, for fear they might leak info prematurely.

I think we should all send an e-mail to DirecTV.
Post both of these links below in your e-mail, and ask them why they are "downsizing" Olympics coverage greatly this time compared to four years ago.
Mention that the one link for 2008 (1st link shown below) had 7 additional channels dedicated to coverage, and now only the mix channel in 2012 (2nd link below). Make sure to include both links in your e-mail. It will hammer your point to them with proof, and the 2008 link makes their 2012 link look really bad. A total downsize in coverage.

Include both in e-mail to DirecTV and ask them why the much lesser coverage this time ....

2008 Link: (with 7 extra channels, channels 750-756)

2012 Link: (just one mix channel which is on channel 205 or 600)

How about asking IF they are downsizing. We don't know yet.

It would be absurd if DirecTV doesn't carry those two channels. It's not even like I have a stake in it, I probably won't watch the soccer channel at all and will only watch a few of the basketball games.

But DirecTV's niche, the main point in their favor over Dish and the cable networks, is their sports programming. They have sports channels and programming packages that other providers don't have. You'd think that, with all the sports fans who are DirecTV subscribes mainly for sports, they would try to keep them happy by airing all the available Olympic channels.

The bright spot is that the first confirmation we had that D* would be carrying those channels was on August 3, the Sunday before the games started. The Sunday before the games start this year is July 22, so hopefully the news will change before then.

Has anyone e-mailed DirecTV about this?

Maybe you'll hear a more direct answer from senior management, than a response from lower-level local management in the call center. They don't seem to know all the details, but have said they won't have the extra channels like they had last time. Maybe senior management has more input and would be willing to say they're still negotiating for those channels perhaps? If not (meaning if no negotiating is going on, and they really aren't carrying those channels like lower management is saying), then it seems like we're out of luck this time.

I was just assured by a Directv Rep that the soccer channel is due to start on July 25th. She didn't know the channel # but it will start on Wednesday the 25th.

Reports of soccer and basketball channels and 3D channel showing up in some areas on Fios (test patterns). Fios rolls out region by region even though their national channels are distributed from a center. The local distribution sites get updated regionally.

I hope this is a valued rep as most CSR's are clueless as to this stuff.

She had to ask her supervisor but then gave me the 25th. Which is before the actual opening ceremony but the start of football. I think if they were bs'ing me they would've givenme the date of the start of the games. She had no idea though about BeIn Sports. Which was a dissappointment.

Well, soccer events start on the 25th and other channels, not only the soccer channel, will be airing these events as well. In other words, the NBC Olympic coverage starts on the 25th in the regular cable channels. If I have to bet, her Supv is full of you know what. But I won't bet and hope that what is really going on here is that Directv really sucks in sports advertisement.

Were you specific enough with the CSR?
Did you ask what exact channel(s) they would be aired on? (for the NBC soccer and/or basketball channel(s).
If they didn't give you the channel #, then that's not exactly confirmation (100% confirmed yet), because these agents and supervisors misunderstand stuff all the time.
They could have been assuming the NBC Sports Network (channel 603) which we already get now, and that channel is supposed to be showing soccer coverage on 7/25 and 7/26 (before the opening ceremony which is on 7/27). It could be that that's what the CSR meant, unless of course you thought to ask what channel(s) it would be aired on, and they responded with something like "channels 750 range", or so.
Hope you're right. Actually, I mean, I hope the CSR understood you.
Thank you very much for your call in and information, and your time, regardless of the CSR (supervisor) information. Much appreciated.

    Okay, nevermind.
I just read where you said that she had said she didn't know the channel #.
So it sounds like they "may" have understood what it is that you were asking about, but didn't know what channel range they would be on yet.

I'm starting to agree with everyone on here now.
It would be shocking if they didn't get these channels.
It just seems like the CSR's, supervisors, and low level management, do not know these things, and then they misunderstand what you're asking about.

Hopefully that supervisor knew what it was that you were asking.
As naive as they are, it's still 50-50 at this point, lol.

    BeIn Sports would be cool.
I would love to see DirecTV get the Eurosport channels from Europe.
Eurosport 1, and Eurosport 2 at least, both in High-Def.
    That would totally rock.

Sign me up with a sports pack with what we have now, plus all Olympic channels (every 4 years), all seven Pac 12 networks (including regional channels), Longhorn Network, BeIn Sports, all Eurosport Channels, and all Comcast SportsNet channels. I would pay $29.95 monthly for that (as the "Deluxe Sports Pack", if there were such a thing). I'm sure a lot of other sports fans would as well. That's about $350-$360 per year of all sports you can think of (slightly less than $1.00 per day for that level of sports pack). Even if you only watch 10 hours a week of sports, it's still awesome to have that sort of variety of selection.

Damn it, DirecTV is will not be carrying them. They replied back to my e-mail, and gave me a bull-sh*t reply in the process. They always gotta turn around a negative like it's a positive or something. Oh well. So much for DirecTV being one of the "most major cable/satellite carriers will be offering these channels" (from NBC's press releases about the extra channels). You dropped the ball DirecTV.

    Here was their reply ....

Weird because if you go to nbcolympics.com and enter your zip and choose your provider as DirecTV, it definitely says you can watch soccer on the Olympic soccer channel.

That is a pretty generic listing. It does not supply channel numbers for soccer/basketball and shows the cable channels (albeit without numbers) if you choose antenna only.

Even if you choose "over the air" (or antenna) as your carrier on that site, it still shows listings with those extra channels.

I still have a feeling this has something to do with the whole NBC/Comcast partnership, which wasn't true four years ago when DirecTV had all those extra channels from NBC.
