Makes sense since they already did all of the labor.
It is still a bit unfair since the $480 that they extract is way more than what it costs them. This is another area that they need to change. With most streaming services you don't have that worry and that's who they are now competing against. If they want people to try their service they cannot do it while holding a bat over peoples heads! Maybe something like a $200 fee in that first month might be less intimidating.

No, once they install it your committed unless you break the contract and pay $20 for each month remaining.

Some states have lemon laws which will let you leave a contract for 72 hours without penalty. Call the Attorney Generals Office of your state and see if it is in your state.

"Cooling off" would be more appropriate ... and as far as I can tell, there is no California law that requires a cooling off period. But I am not a lawyer and it has been a while since I slept in a Holiday Inn.

(If the sale was made in the home, not via phone or at the seller's regular place of business, there would be a cooling off period. That protection is against door-to-door salespeople who pressure sale. With satellite sales, there is a built in cooling off period between the order and the install. Give a lawyer $500 and they might be able to get you out of the $480 ETF. :) )

Just a thought: Call and ask.

Of course if there was a 24 or 72 hour window, you've probably passed that by now.
