    DIRECTV Cinema enhancements overview:

    • For a number of years DIRECTV has been able to "push" our selection of the most popular movies for immediate viewing when it’s available on DIRECTV (most are same day as DVD release) - The new Queue will allow users to personalize which titles are recorded, by selecting and prioritizing future titles from the "In Theaters" category
    • For a number of years DIRECTV on Demand has made hundreds of new and classic movies available for broadband download - The new Queue will allow users without broadband connections to select any of these titles, and be able to view them within a few days (more popular titles will arrive within 2 days)
    • PPV movies on DIRECTV Cinema will eventually comprise of only 1080p titles, and SD only titles will no longer be offered - Those with slower broadband connections will be given an option to download a fast load 720p version of any movie for a more real-time viewing experience
    • Selected movies will be automatically recorded to the playlist, up to a limit chosen by the user (1-10)
    • When movies are viewed, they will be automatically replaced by new movies from the Queue
    • For most effective use of this new feature, users will be encouraged to add as many titles as they like to their Queue, and prioritize titles according to their preference
    • DIRECTV Cinema is available on HR2x/R22 receivers

    Expectations:

    • For now, ch.1096 does NOT have broadband download capability for any title
    • Some movies that are added to your Queue now may not get recorded for several weeks
    • Expanded features and functionality will roll out on ch.1096 Cinema homepage in the coming weeks

    Guidelines:

    • On Channel 1096 the CE Community will be testing a new feature that will eventually be available on DIRECTV Cinema Channel 1100
    • Use ch.1096 only for DIRECTV Cinema
    • Make notes of each movie added to your Queue, playlist functionality, confirmed purchases, user experience, and suggestions for improvements
    • Billing credits will apply for only DIRECTV Cinema titles listed and purchased through ch.1096
    • NO credits for:
      • SD PPV movies on ch.1000 or ch.1100
      • PPV movies broadband downloaded and purchased through ch.1000, 1100, and 1588-1599
      • PPV purchases on ch.119-124, 195-197, and 589-599

    Movies available on 06/01:
    • Boogie Man
    • The Stranger
    • The Wolfman (Unrated)

    Movies available on 06/04:
    • The Young Victoria

    Very interesting. Good job DirecTV.

So they have effectively created a "Netflix Queue" without the need for broadband connections. I can select a series of movies, and have them scheduled and delivered to my DVR? Not a bad solution.

Cost and time (24 hour rule) may kill this though. But, its a good move overall in my opinion.

I'm guessing, from a technology perspective - they have a couple channels running the movies in rotating order (hidden from customers). They then use what amounts to remote scheduling to tell your DVR to go record Channel XXX @ 8:30-10:55pm and authorize that recording for your DVR so it appears in the playlist as soon as it has recorded.

It will be interesting to see the final results. Looks positive though.

    ALERT:

I have posted this question to Greg to check on... on CH 1096 lead page the movie "Tooth Fairy" is listed HOWEVER if you add it to your que it shows as CH 1100 which would put it outside the test arena.

Uncertain if this is a mistake or if it doesn't matter as long as it is showing on CH 1096.

Greg is checking... I would suggest you NOT add it to your Que until it is clarified.

Question, If the broadband functionality is currently not available, exactly how are they going to be downloaded? Via the dish? Also, is the 24 hr rule in effect for these, or will they just sit there until watched or over written after a period of time such as a week? Looking forward to trying it our. Need to make sure I'm up to date on my CE cycle...

    See my post above.

They are most likely running the movies on hidden channels in a rotating fashion. Once you add a movie to your queue - it will be scheduled (like remote scheduling) and made available in your playlist when the recording is complete. The availability will be based off the running schedule.

The 24 hour limit questino is interesting. I would like to know the answer too.

Also - considering the HR24s got their CE earlier - whats the time frame for their availability with this? Is it already in place or do we need to wait until next week?

I also have a question. Are we only supposed to watch the movies available or is that just for our general knowledge they are out there?

I don't see how the 24 hour limit works if you don't even know what day it will download unless it starts when you hit play for the first time. Is that how it works? I have never ordered a movie.

Isn't it 24 hours from the time you start watching it?

I think the 24 hours starts once you've watched the first 5 minutes of the/a movie.
