Has anyone experienced this or does anyone find this suspicious: I have two HR20-700 machines that died within 24 hours of each other - no prior symtoms of coming failure. I think DirecTv decided that it was time to get rid of those old machines so I would buy new ones...

Anyone else experience this, or is it really a coincidence?

That was strictly a coincidence. DirecTV will discontinue support for a receiver but when that happens it is due to obsolete technology and PLENTY of notice is given. I do believe that DirecTV has stopped refurbishing HR20s but the ones in the field will stay until they die. You also do not buy new ones, a replacement is provided at no charge other than $19.95 shipping. Even that is waived if you have the protection plan

You cant buy new receivers there all leased now. HR20s have been dying for some time, most of the time it is the hard drive. They will send you replacement DVRs for the shipping cost and you will not get a new commitment. They sent me an HR24 and its much better than the HR20.

Yeah, there is no benefit for them to do that. $40 later with no commitment, you have new boxes. They just finished phasing out old MPG boxes, SD units made 2003 or earlier.

Just a coincidence. My HR20-700 which was one of the earliest ones (first month of availability) is still going strong, on its original disk drive.

Or you had a surge that killed them and didn't realize it? Directv wouldn't do that, it'd be stupid to wipe out a few million peoples boxes at a time for no reason. And there is no reason to do that for sure...

If they were going to do that now, they surely would have done it as an easier way to get people off the MPG boxes. Hell, fast track getting everyone off MPEG2 by killing every SD box! ;)

The closest I think was "Black Sunday" but that wasn't for no reason :)

I like to read of conspiracies, but this was a coincidence- or a power spike or drop that killed the nearly worn out HDDs.

    Sunny...
I have 4 HR20s (2 -100s, 2 -700s). 3 have had drive replacements but one still running the original after 7 years. Oddly though, this week 1 of my -700s had my local OTA NBC being shown on ALL my local OTA channels thru the AM21. Weird. A reboot fixed that however.

My HR20-700 just developed a problem with the HDMI signal last week. I'm now using a RGB cable.

I still use my HR20 daily. I'm surprised the hard drive hasn't failed on it. I've had it for a very very long time. I want to say 7 years but I don't really know to be honest.
