That's how we use HBO, Showtime and Starz. Just a month or two a year. No sense in keeping them active. I haven't tried Epix, it's getting to the point where I'm losing interest in movies but if they have good original series I would be interested.

I don't know how many times I've watched Oz, but it never seems to get old. You have watched Deadwood, Arliss, Band of Brothers, Big Love, Rome, The Sopranos, Boardwalk Empire, The Deuce, Hung, John Adams, Luck, The Newsroom, The Night Of, Sex and the City, Six Feet Under, Pretty Little Liars, True Blood, True Detective, Veep, and of course the greatest series ever...Game of Thrones? Oh, forgot Carnivale.

Of the shows you mentioned, we haven't seen:

Arliss, Hung, Luck, The Newsroom, The Night Of
    and Pretty Little Liars

The Night Of is probably the best of that bunch but Arliss and Hung are good comedies. Pretty Little Liars is good, didn't get into The Newsroom for some reason.

What bothers me about HBO is the way they just stop a series. Deadwood is a perfect example of that and so is Rome. Still trying to grasp what Carnivale was about. Another show that ended too quickly.

Deadwood & Band of Brothers are my all time favorites. I've watched each multiple times.

Hanks & Spielberg are teaming up for a third WW2 limited series (BoB, The Pacific) about the air war. Apple out bid HBO for the rights. I can't wait to see it though.

No idea why Xumo has never put out an Apple TV app. But Pluto TV is similar and, IMO, better overall. Have you tried it? It does have an app for Apple TV and it even supports the TV app.

And, yes, Apple has said that they ARE going to bring their Apple TV app to Fire TV and Roku in the coming weeks/months, although I'm pretty sure that it will only let you watch content that you subscribe to, rent or purchase from Apple. The main reason they're doing it is to broaden the potential subscriber pool of the upcoming $5/mo Apple TV+ service. But I'm sure you'll also be able to access your Apple TV Channels subscriptions (Showtime, HBO, etc.) through it too, as well as your iTunes purchases and rentals. What I don't think it will do is showcase and link to content from third-party apps like Hulu, Prime Video, ESPN, CBS All Access, HBO Now, Tubi, PBS, etc., the way that the original app does on the Apple TV box.

Apple TV+ isn't messing around. They're spending a ton of money on top-tier talent and stories. I think they're going to, in some ways, become "the new HBO". Except it'll just be original content, no movies that were on at the theater 8 months ago. I'm looking forward to trying it out next month.

I rarely flip to apps. Only if there is something that isn't on Directv, like once or twice I have flipped to Amazon and a few times a year I might flip on Netflix. My brother's account of each is signed in on my TV, I would never pay for that nonsense. Most of the shows are dumb. Their interfaces are very busy and hard to navigate, and if you don't already know what you're looking for, surfing like Directv is just not possible, at least easily. I do use the ESPN app somewhat regularly for things they hide on ESPN3 online only and don't put on TV on the ECE channels. It's just endless scrolling and scrolling and clicking. You can't input a channel number and be brought to a section of the "guide" or "fast forward" in time to see when a certain game is on. It's just not user-friendly compared to Directv.

Sounds like you need some suggested shows to watch. Each service you mention in this post has Emmy award winning content. Even if you don't trust the awards, I can tell you there is some outstanding programming on both services.

As for the interfaces, to each his own I guess.

Yep, all those services have some great stuff. As to the interfaces, well they all suck in their own way IMO. But just like hanging, if you do it long enough you get used to it!! :)

Aaaaand one day after I posted that, bang, the Apple TV app is rolling out on Roku.

The Apple TV app is coming to Roku devices today

No word on when it'll come to Fire TV but at this point I would bet it arrives prior to Nov. 1, when Apple TV+ launches.

I was on the phone yesterday with a tech for a FireTV issue I had and he mentioned that there have been a LOT of updates pushed out lately in preparation for AppleTV + so I expect we will see the app sooner than later.
