I saw this story and found it pretty hilarious. Note that the fees they are talking about will max out at 48 cents per YEAR per subscriber. Yeah, I'm sure satellite subscribers all over the country will be shocked if 4 cents a month gets added to their bill!

Dish, DirecTV will have to start paying higher fees to the FCC | FierceVideo

According to the article it's already at 38 cents a year, so it's going up a full dime per subscriber for the whole year. They'll be rioting in the streets.

They aren't charging satellite more than cable, they are charging it less. And for years satellite wasn't getting charged at all so it was getting a free ride.

IMHO it is better to have fees to cover the FCC's cost to regulate cable and satellite than to lump it in with taxes. That way only those who use the services pay for it.

This part says DBS getting charged more :

"Representatives from DirecTV and Dish met with the FCC earlier this month to argue against raising the DBS per subscriber rate by 25% while simultaneously lowering the per subscriber rate paid by cable operators by almost 20%...."

Ok, now read the part that gives the actual rates being paid. DBS will "jump" from 38c to 48c while cable pays 77c. 77 cents is higher than 48 cents.

"This year, the regulatory fees for DBS providers will jump to 48 cents per subscriber per year, and leave other MVPDs with a regulatory fee of 77 cents per subscriber per year."

Read the article ... If you believe that cable is paying less than DBS then you are not reading the article.
