The Doctor Who season finale aired last night, and with less than five minutes to go, my DVR (Genie) decided to shut off the recording -- which I found out when I tried to watch this morning (slamming head against desk)...

No idea. My HR44 showed the program as being 1hr 25 minutes and it recorded in full. First showing yesterday.

Did you check the History to see if there is any indication as to why it didn't record the whole episode?

Yeah -- no reason given for it. Ugh. I am really pulling my hair out about now....

Mine also recorded 1:25 but stopped at 1:05 on my hr34, but on my hr21 it recorded 1:25 and played 1:25 so it had to be a genie screw up

I had this problem with my HR34 enough that I had it replaced. I now have a HR44 and, so far, have not had recordings end early.

That's exactly what mine did -- I ended up hunting down a recording online to watch the rest of it, but that was insanely frustrating...

There should be repeat airings on BBC America. Whether the Genie does better on the replay than the original is a fair question.

But if you decided to record a repeat airing of something where the first time didn't catch the end, you'd probably manually pad it out an extra half hour just to be safe.

I don't get BBCA on my cable package so I don't know how they work but I learned from experience that some channels just don't keep to their schedule too well. I always add an extra 15 minutes if I record a movie on USA or Comedy Central for instance, because I've been burned a few times trying to watch and seeing the last 5 or 10 minutes of something else and then of course I miss the end of the movie. FX and TNT keep to their schedule perfectly every time. Guess some channels just sell extra ad time that causes things to run over, or they do it deliberately to discourage use of DVRs.

Oh, I know, but it's just a pain in the tail -- the Genie said it was pulling the extra time initially (and in the recorded info). Now this is the first time I have ever run into this kind of glitch, so I'll chalk it up to a one-time affair (but being one of my favorite shows -- and a season ender, it's pretty frustrating).

I don't see that episode listed on DIRECTV yet, but the BBC America site has full episodes online. Not sure when this one will be there, but last week's episode was there yesterday.

My recording was the first 9:00 ET showing. So far, there are no replays scheduled, and this episode is not yet available on demand.

Padding wouldn't have worked. It stopped playing at 1:05 in a recording that was 1:25 long according to the genie. Something else corrupted the recording. Plus my hr21 recorded and played the whole thing.

The hr34 genie didn't record the first minute of Startalk last night for some reason. Said 59 min partial. It played fine just missed first minute.

This is absolutely rediculous. This reminds me of 2006 all over again when directv couldn't figure out why programs weren't being recorded. Oh well, shouldn't expect much from a AT&T.

I've only had my HR44 about a month, and this is the first time I've experienced it. Said it was 1:11 long (I think it was) but cut off shortly before the end.

I wonder if the actual guide data includes a start and end time as well as length. If so, maybe the Genies display the length from the data base but use the start/top times for controlling the recording, and other models use the start and length data. (??) I can imagine some clerk submitting the data into the Tribune data base remembering to change the length input for a non-standard episode, but not thinking to update the end time.

It happened on my HR34 last week with an episode of "Life in Pieces". The recording cut off a few minutes early. Not an issue with the episode running past its scheduled time, either. It stopped playing a few minutes short of the scheduled end of the recording. The recording showed the full 30 minutes, but I got the "Keep/Delete" option with about 5 minutes to go.
