Don't confuse resolution and bandwidth. I have seen an entire OTA broadcast channel used for a single SD feed and have also seen the same amount of bandwidth carved up into two HD resolution feeds.

Most channel have moved to HD distribution, even channels that are not carried in HD can be received in HD and converted. Passing through the HD depends on contracts and available bandwidth (since a HD channel should consume more space on a satellite or cable feed than a SD channel). Reception in HD does not guarantee distribution in HD.

Because if you tune to the channel your TV reports it is receiving a 720p signal.

My point is being missed. All I am saying is that I have learned (in dealing with cable head-end issues) that it is not automatic, at least in the cable world, that a network's HD feed will be routed automatically from their IRD to inhabit HD allocated bandwidth. This happens with networks having both an SD feed and a HD feed. The IRD's have no reason to know or care how much bandwidth has been allocated to their network so they don't automatically open up the HD port. So there have to be 2 steps taken by the engineers to insure that both the HD feed (not the SD one) is routed to the HD pathway to match up.

In the case of JBS on DTV, the picture is crummy enough to have made some of us wonder, including Gary Toma, whether in fact this was still SD video we were looking at, independent of the 720p feedback we were getting from our receivers. In essence, an up conversion of 480i video to 720p. The DTV uplink switched Ch. 388 to 720p but we didn't know whether JBS had an SD feed which was routed there, incorrectly perhaps, instead of their HD feed.

Anyways, it's a moot point now as Kyle has helped us by reporting that JBS does not have an SD feed, only an HD one. Thus, the JBS IRD doesn't have the option of choosing between 2 video feeds (SD, HD).

The more I see of JBS HD on Verizon Fios, the more I think that it's similar to EWTN in that it's "HD", but none of their programming is really produced in it. The graphics certainly are though.

Yes! Air JBS in so we can see that hottie on the Cruising Israel show in high def.

    No news.

We have had some years in which we received little in the way of additions of high def; or little in the way of upgrading a programmer, carried in standard def, to high def.

From some past years, we had over ten. (And a number of them were the upgrades of the kind referred to in the prior paragraph.)

I have been posting here since 2010. This is my tenth consecutive year. No one particular year, from that time forward, was there not a single added HD.

I think 2019 will see at least one HD get added. I can’t predict but can imagine there will be an upgrade of a programmer who is carried in SD. So, that is why I had an early-2018 post of guessing the following:

    302 Nicktoons HD
    338 UP HD

    605 Sportsman Channel HD

Last year, I guessed one which did get added:

    240 Home Shopping Network HD

In the later part of 2018, I was guessing a programmer who was (and still is) not at all carried by AT&T’s DirecTV (but is on AT&T’s U–verse): Epix.

If I wanted to guess up to five (because it is a standout number), I would feel uncomfortable doing so because I haven’t kept up with reading about any contracts near renewal time. But, with no harm in doing so, I can go ahead and mention five:

    302 Nicktoons HD
    303 TeenNick HD
    338 UP HD

    602 TVG HD
    605 Sportsman Channel HD

I am reluctant with TVG. But, at the same time, I have to mention five—and, by comparison, there appears to be no urgency by AT&T, with either U–verse or DirecTV, for the C–Spans and/or NASA. Since I mentioned two from Nickelodeon, and that is Viacom, I have thought about the group from BET which includes BET Her. I have considered EVINE Live in HD. As an outsider, this is not easy. So, I figure I can estimate.

I think upgrading programmers’ carried SD to HD—and this includes premium-movie multiscreens from Starz for its Starz Encore—will eventually happen. (People have mentioned, plenty of times, OuterMax not carried at all let alone in HD.)

According to a separate topic thread, we will receive the following, brand-new programmer to be added with launch, on August 22, 2019, by AT&T’s DirecTV: ACC Network HD. (My feeling is that it will be assigned to ch. 613.)

ACC Network applies to what I said earlier: That we have been getting at least one new HD, per year, with each year of this decade.

is the end of april still up for the END of MEPG2?? At least some stuff can get MPEG 4 SD with better bit rates.

It never was the date for the end of MPEG2, the only people who thought that are those who didn't read past a headline, or for whatever reason still believe articles written by certain predictors of TV who have no idea what they are talking about.

The only thing happening is that on April 2nd the first two markets are losing their MPEG2 SD locals from 119, Laredo and Topeka, who for the past few months have had ALERTS channels about the pending removal of their SD locals and the need to upgrade if they want to continue to receive their locals after that date. Letters have also been sent to other affected 119 SD local markets, but no ALERTS channels have appeared for them yet.

When they set the hard date for national MPEG2 you will hear about it well in advanced as they'll need to notify and convert every single SD only subscriber in the 101 markets, as well as those who have a mixed HD/SD setup, and arrange dish swaps for people who still have round 18 or oval Phase II/III dishes (Contrary to the popular belief by people here who tend to be early adopters, there are A LOT of subscribers who fall under that category, which is why they're doing this on a market by market basis in phases.)

It is the beginning of the end that we have been hearing about for the past few years. At least now it is finally being acknowledged that MPEG2 will not end overnight. The real confusion comes from the predictors (and human centipede websites) that are claiming all SD is going away. "Everything will be HD with no SD channels." Nope.

According to Directv documents I was sent, they plan to end ALL MPEG2 SD national duplicates by the end of this year. They have a schedule for dropping various DMAs, in groups of three or so, roughly every week or so starting in April (there might be one dropped before the end of this month, the list I saw starts with "DMA group 2" and there is notice provided on a few markets that they need to upgrade ASAP so it may be "DMA group 1") They will drop all the MPEG2 SD spot beams, followed by all the MPEG2 SD national duplicates, but what I saw didn't provide dates for the latter beyond the fact it will be done before the end of this year.

As part of this, the satellites at 95, 110 and 119 will all stop broadcasting Directv programming. Everything for the US and Puerto Rico will be on 99, 101 or 103 only.

Does anybody know if the more Hd channels added do they just take away more PPV channels or do they have more bandwidth now to not affect PPV

They still have bandwidth scattered across various satellites from when 19 RSNs moved to D14 as prep for League Pass for Puerto Rico, along with other transponders that haven't been filled when a bunch of the part time CINEHD channels moved to D14 so Puerto Rico could get Sunday ticket in HD. The last few additions didn't use CINEHD, they used some of that vacant space.

They will have tons of bandwidth freeing up later this year, with T16's launch (scheduled for early May, this should add 8 new Ka transponders) and dropping MPEG2 SD duplicates (this will happen before the end of the year, and free up lots of transponders on 101)

If the Viacom dispute is resolved and there's a new DTV deal, let's hope most of the missing Viacom HD channels are added to the new contract.

I'm particularly interested in Logo-HD being added as it will be airing the big Eurovision Song Contest on May 18th... This is one of the world's biggest music festivals, amazing show every year !

Logo-HD would be awesome! In 2017 I used the free trial for Sling TV to watch Logo in HD for Eurovision then in 2018 I did the same thing with Philo lol. I wish Logo would also air the Semi-Finals.

Yeah, most of the top European broadcasters air the Semi-Finals the week before, they're as big, so Logo could probably do the same. They can package it just like a sports tournament, ie. NCAA, but for music.

Hell I would be happy if they would at least show the semi-finals on their YouTube channel at least if they didn't want to show them on their actual channel or at least not geo-block the live stream from the official ESC YouTube channel.
