I see little point in having western feeds in HD until everything is in HD at least once. You can always record the eastern feed and watch it at a time that is convenient for you. If there is a choice between adding something in HD that is currently only in SD versus adding a time-shifted version of something that is already available in HD, I will always be in favor of adding the new content.

You're assuming everyone who subscribes to DirecTV has a DVR. That's not the case.

Spot beam western HD feeds in the Western 2 timezones then? Or IPTV them over Cinema Connection Kit?

I would remove the sports channels from that list as they are different contract wise.

Also put chiller HD into the list

Really looking forward to Universal Sports HD. Is that available in HD anywhere, though, or are we just wishfully hoping? With the Winter Olympics next year I'm sure they'll have some curling leading up to the Games. This is probably the only way for me to catch any non-Olympic curling.

No, I just assume that anyone who cares enough about whether a channel is HD or SD will have a DVR.

Wrong again. There's a sizable amount of DirecTV customers who care about HD but do not have a DVR.

I suppose then the question is, what is sizable? I suspect there is a much higher percentage of dvr owners in the hd base than the sd. Maybe someone has some actual numbers to post.

Yes, these numbers are for the "unwashed masses". ;) We, of course, are much more advanced. I suspect the % are much higher for Directv customers. Also, it doesn't point to how many hd vs sd customers have a dvr, the real question.

It would be interesting to see the % of new DirecTV customers that are signing up and getting DVRs, vs those choosing regular receivers.

New customers? Aren't all the deals for new customers steering them toward DVRs?

My sister is the only member of the family that does not have a DVR. She does have HD (not DirecTV; she is fios). I never understood that logic. She is not a huge TV watcher but she does like specific shows she watches almost every day.

And more specifically, DirecTV customers who subscribe to HD. Those who only subscribes to SD would not care whether the West Coast feed was in SD or HD. The real question is what percentage of DirecTV customers subscribe to HD but do not have a DVR. I believe that number is shrinking by the day.

She doesn't really care about that. She didn't think of it when she signed up and just hasn't made arrangements to get one.
