When I turned on the Genie today, it said they added a bunch of 4k content. I don't have a 4k TV, so I don't know what's out there.

Are there linear 4k channels currently (with any provider)? As far as I know, only streaming options are available.

There is no linear 4K yet, they just added more overpriced VOD titles.

Agree, but when? Anything new in test? Would like to see AHC HD, and more Encore HD.

When I pressed menu, I think. Usually this type of message comes after a software update (if there's added or changed functionality).

I pressed the guide button yesterday and got a full screen message about 4K programming on VOD. The message then said to look for the 4K designator.

That screen message may have come down with the new software that i received on my HR44 yesterday. (Version B15)

I received the same message this morning, but don't see the 4K designator anywhere. Where do you look?

I can't wait for that message on my HR-44. That means i've moved to the latest and greatest national release.

Do you think there will ever be anymore brand new channels anymore? (not just replacing other channels), or will they just start closing?

There will always be brand new channels, the problem is very few of them have a chance of getting widespread carriage unless they are either backed by another established company and can get carriage as part of a renewal for their other channels, have content that is must have for a significant amount of people, or they decide to pay directly for carriage (like what Newsmax is doing on both DirecTV and Dish)

Like why is Viceland replacing H2? Could it not just get carriage as part of a renewal by A and E Networks? H2 was hardly a flop channel, and isn't the H2 channel continuing worldwide anyway?

Both them and Vice want to launch the channel on every major provider, as opposed to waiting 5+ years for the contracts to come up for renewal with every provider (potentially even longer for providers who renewed before the deal with Vice was made). Plus A&E has a hard enough time getting Lifetime Real Women and Military History carried.

Adding a new channel instead of rebranding is really for cases where you can't rebrand an existing channel for various reasons:
SEC and Longhorn have regional pricing in their contracts, so Disney couldn't rebrand one of the other ESPN channels.

Disney Junior was initially going to replace SoapNet, but contract clauses prevented them from doing so and it ended up launching as a new channel. (Altough some companies like Comcast ended up dropping SoapNet early anyway, screwing their subscribers out of some programming in the remaining years of the channel, like the General Hospital 50th anniversary marathon back in 2013)

El Rey was a new addition from Univision and Robert Rodriguez as part of the call for new minority owned channels as a condition of the Comcast/NBCU takeover, so they couldn't just rebrand one of Univision's other channels like UniMas or Galavision to create it.

What we need is fewer channels with better programming

That may happen, gradually, as a result of cord-cutting trending further toward streaming. That change would not happen in a flash; that it would be gradual. But, the oversaturation of these linear channels from programmers, plus the continuous greed of the programmers (most especially ESPN), may lead to an eventual downsizing.

Adding to the response by KyL416: The rebrands also are an image thing—newer, maybe younger, and fresher. For the previous [programmer name]…well, with the change, the one which is getting phased out is regarded as possibly out of date and in need of a new start. (Yes, that may seem like b.s. But, that is what happens anyway.)

Take a look at what's the highest rated content on cable TV, and you might rethink that wish for fewer channels... Yeah you'll get fewer channels, but unless you watch nothing but those type of shows, it won't be "better programming"
