THE ABOVE QUOTE HAS BEEN EDITED TO ONLY THAT WHICH I WANTED TO REPLY TO

I feel pretty good about DirecTV adding HD versions of channels that they currently offer in SD. It might not happen with D12, but eventually. Not counting the ones you listed above:

BBC America, Centric, ESPNU*, Fox Movie Channel**, Fuse, G4, Gospel Music Channel*, Hallmark Channel**, HSN, Investigation Discovery, Jewelry TV,
Lifetime Movie Network, Logo, National Geographic Wild**, Ovation**, Oxygen, QVC, Reelz Channel**, RFD-TV, TBN*, TruTV, Turner Classic Movies, TV One

    * - Announced As Coming To DirecTV
** - Announced As Offering An HD Channel Later This Year

I felt dirty adding the home shopping channels to the list... but they needed to be included.

I included ESPNU to the list since it's in the base packages, and not the Sports Package. There are other sports channels that I did not list.

I did not list the C-SPAN channels since I'm not aware if they are starting up this year or later.

I did not list Hallmark Movie Channel even though DirecTV supposedly has a contract with them since DirecTV does not carry Hallmark Movie Channel in SD.

I just received an email from DTV that they have no plans to add TCM HD to their line up. Of course my local cable has it. So much for the gold standard in HD.

They will say that about any channel that has not been added yet.

That probably means the CSRs don't currently have any information on any plans to add it. Doesn't mean they are not going to add it.

There was some speculation that D would add national HD channels when resources became available at the end of the regular NFL season. I'm still hoping that's the case and we don't have to wait until D12 is parked and fully tested.

NFL regular season ended a month ago. No channels by now probably means none til D12 is operational.

Since there are a number of factors going into the launch of a new HD channel (carriage agreement, setup & testing, bandwidth allocation, etc.), I'm not sure I'd make that assumption.

D12 is still at least 10 weeks or more away...plenty of time to light up another national HD channel or more if they are planned and ready.

Just because its possible doesn't mean its going to happen. Do you have any sources that say contracts are in place for immediate HD additions? I can't seem to find any. Also you're forgetting they still need the bandwidth for sporting events like the Olympics, March Madness, any golf or tennis tournaments, NASCAR HotPass etc.

...and just because it hasn't happened doesn't mean it won't. :D

The basic point is that if everything required to launch another HD channel, or two, or more is in place soon, then it could happen without the mandate to wait for D12.

I have heard that MSNBC and ESPNU will be added before D12 is Active but you can take that with a Grain of Salt. It does though come from more than one reliable source.

MSNBC has to be added before the Olympics, because DirecTV is advertising it along with NBC etc. as the channels to watch the Olympics in HD.

It doesn't really matter, because it makes perfect sense. MSNBC HD has to be up before February 12th, ESPNUHD has to be up before March 31st. Neither channel can wait until D12 is active, so they're just going to add them now.

Does ESPNU need to be up by March 31st? I know that D* promised it in the first quarter, but that was when D12 was to launch earlier. It makes sense to add MSNBC HD full time now because of the Olympics, but even that D* could put on part time.

It definitely doesn't seem impossible that D* will do essentially a sports HD launch next week, but I would like to know the source.

The fact that it was promised within a certain timeframe means that their contract with ESPN most likely says that it has to be up within a certain timeframe. DirecTV knew that there would be free capacity if D12 hadn't been lit up by then, so I'm sure they had no problem agreeing to it.

And FSC has already confirmed that DirecTV is receiving their HD signal, so I doubt they're just going to sit on it for the next two months.
