Limited facts have appeared in this thread, but plenty of opinion.
Apparently not that many, as the number of the net new subscribers keeps growing, as well as their total number of subscribers.

160+ HD channels to choose from is hardly "an extreme lack".

On the other hand, Dish and cable have lost a significant number subscribers the past few quarters, so it would seem DirecTV is getting things more "right" than some other providers.

Once additional new HD channels surface in the next month or so...it will further close any perceived gap, even to some naysayers.

With DVR, I would be happy with 1 or 2 HBO's in HD. They repeat the shows over and over. With HBO on demand, what's the point of more HBO channels repeating the same programs? The same goes with the other premiums.

I haven't studied the guide but it seems to me that HBO Signature and HBO Family do show a lot of different programming than the other HBO's. Signature seems to be the smaller, independent films while Family is well, uh, for family.

I'm not so sure about what family shows in the evenings but in the mornings and early afternoon they show stuff I know doesn't show up on the other HBO's.

This is a foolish statement. How can you say that with over 160 hd channels that there is an extreme lack of basic hd channels? If they don't have what you want, go somewhere else. It's pretty simple, really.

HBO SIG is perhaps the best HBO channel if you like great movies like Chinatown and Frenzy. Good HD addition, IMO.

Not sure if this was serious or not ... :)

Sunday Ticket shares bandwidth with Cinema HD, thus unless the NFL is going away permanently (which might reduce the part-time HD shared bandwidth need) then no effect.

And as most know, lots of bandwidth out there ... 6 open transponders on D12 ... and 3 slots on D12 TP11 ... and then there's those 5 mystery slots on D12 TP20 for over a year ...

Capacity: How many individual channels does this make possible for DirecTV to add in HD (not already made available; please discount 03.30.2011 additions of HBO Signature HD and HBO Family HD)?

It seems like no matter what happens people are going to complain. I really think tomorrow Directv could add every missing HD channel they carry in standard and people will still complain that the International Food & Wine Network is not available to subs! I understood the uproar over the HD ppv channel explosion when they lit up whichever "D" that was, but this is just plain silly in my opinion.

I do not subscribe to HBO. However, I do not feel it is a waste of time for them to add it. It's not all about me, me, me, me. I am aware there are thousands of people who subscribe to premium channels and want the most value for their $ as well. It's not like Directv told those people, "ok, you want HBO well since we only have 2 channels in HD and you have an HD package we'll drop $5 off your HD or Premium fee." They pay the same thing we basic subs do to have access to those HD channels.

Just like many of you lament not having BBC America HD, DIY HD, AMC HD, etc. (which those I couldn't personally care less if they were even offered in SD let alone HD) Those people have been waiting for their premiums in HD to be added. Why it is that just because a channel addition didn't suit your desires you feel the need to complain about it is beyond me.

    +1

Besides, if the NFL is in a strike and additional channels are put in HD, what happens when the NFL comes back (which it will)? Do those HD channels come down?

More HD is coming folks. One deal was just done last week. Another was also completed recently. More to come this Spring. :D

Sure, the D12 utilization table is always up-to-date in the Status/Notification thread:

If you want more HD then get the Premier package. I don't go to my neighbors and whine about wanting a car as nice as his when I could get one just like it if I paid more money.

    Thanks.

Could 33 HD additions come in without much hurting quality?
