Yep, there are more SD customers than we realize - and they don't realize it either. They hook their shiny new LCD or plasma up with coax and voila! They have HD. (not). It drives me nuts when I travel and a hotel advertises in room HD and they have the setup I described.

How about seeing a Plasma HDTV or LCD with RCA Composite Cables (Yellow, White & Red) hooked up to it.

    Absolutely Incredible.

Or not paying Directv for HD Channels and telling your customers that you have HD because you have an HD Capable TV.

I'm not quite sure what wasn't done or isn't being done correctly vis-a-vis the digital/HD transition and subsequent related receiving equipment sales but we've apparently ended up with a large number of woefully uneducated and misinformed citizens.

    "WOO HOO!

We're back in the anticipation saddle.

I like our odds on some new HD channels this quarter."

That's pretty much your same prediction from last quarter. How did that one turn out?

Is this a contest on prediction accuracy? If so, then put me down for 2 channel additions in Q1.

I would say true-true and unrelated because as best as I can tell the latter half of the sentence has little to do with the first half.

I thought it would be apparent that I was referring to the government/industry attempts at educating the public, and retail establishment personnel being adequately informed/trained to assist the buying public in making appropriate purchase decisions. I guess I was wrong?...

We are more likely to see a Hovel (even though we have no idea what it is) than more HD by Direct

Out here in the Pacific Northwet, most of us have the option of Comca$t, Charter or satellite so there are an awful lot of satellite dishes. Truth be told, cable covers much of the non-sports SD TV offerings with much better package deals so the point of having DBS is lost on those who subscribe to basic packages.

Satellite was the only way to get a good selection of HD until last year.

HD is evidently very popular in the English speaking areas where I travel. Economic status doesn't appear to be a factor (unless the Nouveau Riche [French for "new rich" for those who grew up on Elmo and Barney the dinosaur instead of Bugs Bunny and Bullwinkle] live in stealth mansions).

Satellite must distinguish itself by offering what people can't get from cable and that pretty much has to be live HD content. At some point, DIRECTV management will figure out that with the advent of the Internet, pretty much everyone has had to make a deal with the cable devil for at least their broadband service and once the camel gets its nose in the tent...

Sometimes...the DirecTV folks are more aware of things than some people realize or give them credit for....

Being aware and acting on something are two decidedly different stages in the process. Action is at least two steps removed from awareness.

While true...they don't give credit to the fact that the general public doesn't always know what actions are taking place, until they are made public.

Along those lines, and in consideration of DirecTV's general history of not announcing new channel launchings until contracts are signed and the necessary testing is done....we'll just have to wait (and anticipate) what may still come on the HD channel startups in 1Q 2011.

Unfortunately, 99.9% of the time we hear nothing from D* about new programming. That info. usually comes from a 3rd party. SIGH!

Directv is aware of one thing for sure. Sports fans are fanatics, much more so than Mad Men, Walking Dead, and Top Gear fans, and will pay up the yazoo to watch and wear the same jersey as a bunch of over payed hoodlums.

This started 10+ years ago and satellite fit perfectly for distribution. Cable could never touch it. However times they are a changing and their is a new medium, the internet. I will be trying MLB.tv on my popcorn hour and if it works well enough I'm not really seeing what Directv has to offer me anymore as all I care about sports wise is a single team.

Last time I viewed "over payed hoodlums" was when I was viewing C-SPAN, not major league sports.

I don’t have time right now to go through this entire thread but do we know if DirecTV plans on having TruTV in HD in time for the NCAA tourney?

Is there going to be any Mega March Madness package this year?
