Well, most cell phones are "free", and many smart phones are heavily subsidized. Price, or cost to consumer, may have precious little to do with cost of manufacture, distribution, installation, servicing a receiver of a retail customer.

    Still not buying it bro.

Again, they are into what? A fourth generation box at this point? Getting ready to roll out a mini-box?

If computers held costs like that we'd all still be using 486 chips.

    VOD in HD.

The channels "promised" 4 years ago require the programmer to provide those channels. Sometimes things change, one party at the last minute says no. I've seen weddings where a beautiful woman is waiting and the guy changes his mind and doesn't show up, even though all the invitations were sent out.

Yes, in real life, things sometimes change, even after the invitations go out. Same for March Madness on mix channel this year. It's not happening. Sometimes after plans are made and the invitations (ads) are sent out, things can change that send a monkey wrench into the whole thing. No one likes it. In fact, usually everyone is pretty upset about it, but it does happen every so often, unfortunately.

But since you asked, I'm hopeful you'll see some more HBO HD in this quarter as well, we'll see.

They never "promised" them. They issued a press release regarding plans to launch them. Those plans changed obviously. All plans are subject to change and of course that will happen when the circumstances surrounding those plans change. This has been discussed many, many times.

 You don't have to buy it, I see the costs every day. Ever wonder why all the MSOs with legacy customers still have SD units? Well, there's a reason. The only ones that don't are FIOS and Uverse because they launched their service in an HD age, so they don't have legacy boxes....yet.

It's ok. I went to school with a lot of Badger folks and they're lovable sorts for the most part.

For new customers, it is 24 months either way.

The lease entry prices on successive units are probably pretty close to cost so I'd suggest it is not a case of double the cost. The antenna and switchgear are probably merging as fast as anything.

They named the channels and gave a date range that the channels would start turning up. What do you call it when someone very publicly offers that they are going to do something and offers a time line to go with? It borders very closely on a contract in exchange for the customer's unwavering loyalty and confidence.

Correct. And sometimes at the last minute, the bride decides not to marry the groom or vice versa, even though the invitations (Press Release) have been sent out.

It happens very rarely, but it does happen. You can't put the toothpaste back in the tube, or un-ring the bell. You can't force the bride to marry you, just as you can't force the programmer to provide the programming and vice versa.

The good news is, a lot of positive things have happened (obviously) in the last few months to be able to add some content with HBO and Cinemax for the first time in a long time. More is on the way, with some positive announcements forthcoming

As already stated, HBO and Cinemax HD VOD in the next week. I suspect you'll see some more announcements to follow

Well since you have been broadcasting the entire tournament in HD for a few years now, I would say that's a pretty big step backwards. Yes, in 2011 I would say you do need to show it in HD to be considered the leader. Especially when the competition will be showing it in HD. This was one if the packages that used to set you apart from the competition. Now it still does only in a negative way. Perhaps if the SD on DirecTV were actually watchable it would be different. I for one would rather still have the MMM package available to me and have the option of paying more to see it with a clear picture. I would be fine with that, even though your competitors customers would still be getting it at no additional charge.

This isn't a 2 hour figure skating event. It's one of the biggest sporting events of the year that carries on for almost a month.
