I also live in New England, and have MeTV with the AM21, so it's sorta on Directv...

With the exception of the dismal Springfield, MA DMA I think New England is farily well covered OTA in/near the well-populated areas.

I guess I should have been more specific, I didn't say everyone could not get me tv, I said I couldn't because I live on the border between Maine and NH, so D* gives all Maine channels for my locals, Portland, Westbrook, Lewiston,Auburn,Bidderford, yet I am closer to NH cities, which have my local weather, closer to me then all the Maine cities, I live closer to Ma. stations then some of the Maine stations. Also I do not have a outside ant. so a AM21 would be of little help, I would need a roof top ant to get NH locals or Maine locals near me, I could get the Boston feeds with a roof top ant.
I believe D* should allow you to get the channels that are close by, not 40 or 50 miles away. I am 15 minutes or less to NH PBS with lots of programming for NH and southern, Maine, but my PBS is from the UOM college system, also cable may have it in Maine but I prefer D* so I have to live with the situation.

I hope that explains it better, sorry If I ranted on to long .

PS No I cannot afford to purchase a quality outside ant. and have someone install it for me,or I might do it how you do.

Unfortunately what you want isn't even up to dtv. It's the FCC and the locals that decided what you are allowed via DIRECTV.

I mentioned this here before, went to North Conway earlier this year and they had Maine locals there, It caught me off guard but It's the DMA that were assigned that way. I live between Manchester and Portsmouth and I can't get reception of metv with any indoor antennas, actually I got nothing from it but since I live in an apartment complex I can't try those big outdoors ones without permission and all that good stuff. The only solution would be Comcast basic package just for locals. You there have time warner for cable ? I know in Maine is TW, it could be a solution but don't know if it is worth the extra $$ added on.

I have the basic broadcast channels and HBO from Comcast - it made the Internet cheaper by $20/month vs. stand-alone. Stable source of subchannels, too! Coos County NH (and maybe one more county) is Portland DMA with WMUR on SV. So there are people in NH who can't even get NH PBS on Directv - but it is available in all of VT, except Bennington Co, and the Adirondacks of NY due to the NH PBS Littleton transmitter, WLED, being in the Burlington VT DMA. It is also available in Boston, Worcester, and Cape Cod on Directv. Cable coverage of NH Prime is statewide, but the rural areas of the north don't have cable everywhere. And that's really it - not far over the borders of NH, it is not on cable.

HD anticipation (local): The Vermont CW added to the Directv lineup! They recently went HD OTA and yet Directv is the only provider without it. Even Dish has it!! Going to a friends house one county north greatly reduces channel availability. From everything (except MundoFox) to just CBS NBC (twice) ABC FOX and 3 PBS affiliates.
I wonder if us folks in the Directv locals utopia of Windham Co VT (Boston/NH AND Burlington, VT in HD) would get it. We don't have WPTZ (NBC Plattsburgh, NY - Burlington VT DMA) but we have their sister station WNNE (NBC Hartford VT - Burlington VT DMA). WNNE is not multiplexed so it is just NBC. WPTZ is the parent station of the CW. Springfield MA is technically closer than either Boston or Burlington but shhhh! don't tell anyone. Their locals are awful.

Sounds as if it is time for the FCC to re-look at how the DMA's are allocated. Since all our Congress people are really doing nothing but worrying about getting re-elected you could start an effort asking via Congress for the FCC to look at allocations - some of those may have been done a long time ago when there were different stations. I live in Portland, ME so don't have those issues but our locals spend a lot of time with NH news.

DMAs are market areas based on economic connections between counties. They are redrawn from time to time as a county on the edge becomes more connected with a different DMA. While some DMAs have not changed since the 70's their economic connections have not changed ... so they remain valid. Or at least as valid as if an edge county would have moved.

I'd rather see coverage areas used instead of DMAs ... if a TV station has a broadcast license that covers a customer their signal should be delivered to that customer. But there would need to be something worked out for the customers outside of broadcast coverage areas (currently extending coverage to the edge of the DMA). On cable "significantly viewed" crosses DMA lines (where a station has broadcast coverage outside of the DMA) but SV has different rules for satellite than cable. It is a complicated situation.

I agree with this... if a station's OTA signal covers you (including all translators, repeaters, etc), you should get that channel, regardless of DMA. I think the DMA system should stay with that, too, so that people without OTA coverage still have locals. They can get sports blackouts down to zip codes, no reason they can't with locals. It is a complicated situation that doesn't need to be complicated! People who live in MA near the RI border get Providence channels only on satellite, despite excellent Boston OTA coverage in that area. Cable has both cities, to your point. When in lived in NC, I got all of the Raleigh locals OTA, but not all of the Greensboro DMA locals, but I was in the Greensboro DMA. So I got an AM21.

I would also like to see DNS or national feeds - or nearest affiliate - for networks not in your DMA or OTA coverage (CW, My, the Spanish channels). And a superstations package for KTLA, WPIX, etc, like what Dish used to offer. I also want LP and CD locals on satellite. And subchannels on satellite, at least the major ones. I want a lot of things. I will get none of them.

Even if you could convince them of that, the FCC would want to wait until after the 600 MHz auction and repack is complete, and we see what if anything happens with ATSC 3.0. Some channels will be moving from UHF to VHF hi or lo, some VHF hi may move to VHF lo, some channels will be transmitted from a different location so what you receive today via antenna may not be possible to receive tomorrow and vice versa. Or you might need to replace your indoor antenna with a roof or attic antenna. Lots of changes coming in the next few years, at least many DMAs.

And what you'd want them to review are the differing laws for what locals satellite is allowed to carry versus cable. They should level the playing field there, then it would be up to Directv to decide whether they want to provide access to locals from other markets where cable already does.

Perhaps streaming might provide a way around this impasse. I don't know how the law is written, but if Directv can't broadcast certain channels via satellite that cable is allowed to carry, I wonder if they could provide those channels via streaming? We know they've been working on obtaining streaming rights for locals, I'm sure that's targeted at the new streaming packages they announced that are supposed to be offered late this year. But perhaps that might also offer them a way to deliver those channels to Directv satellite customers? Like I said, depends on how the law is written. It would also be a way for them to offer subchannels that they don't have the satellite bandwidth to provide.

So when is GSN HD going live? Usually Wednesday's for new HD right, however didn't it go to test Thursday? Then you have 7/1 on Friday so there's a good chance the new contract starts on the new quarter beginning then.

FM HD is listed for 6/30 at 6am ET/3am PT
GSN HD isn't on the app yet, so no idea when it's going live
(One World Sports HD wasn't in test last week, and when it was visible on the app it didn't have any listings to indicate when it would start)

Contrary to what a certain predictor of TV continues to claim, Wednesday hasn't been the standard for ages, going back to late 2012 (not counting things added at launch/relaunch like SEC or Root Southwest):
    Monday:
OWN and FS San Diego (4/1/13)
    Bloomberg (4/15/13)
    SportsMix (5/27/13)
    ESPN Deportes (8/26/13)
    WeatherNation (12/16/13)
    MTV2 (12/22/14)
    Nick Jr (6/1/15)
    Al Jazeera America (11/2/15)
    Comedy.tv and Justice Central (12/28/15)
    DTV4K (4/4/16)

    Wednesday:
BBC America, Nat Geo Wild, Disney Junior, beIN (8/15/12)
    DIY and Ion East (9/19/12)
    Fusion and Longhorn (1/21/15)
    Fox Deportes (5/13/15)
    NOW (8/19/15)
    CASH (9/23/15)
    Fuse (9/30/15)

    Thursday:
    TCM (7/19/12)
TWC SportsNet and TWC Deportes (11/15/12 - in the middle of the evening just in time for that night's game)
LMN, Investigation Discovery, TV Land (1/24/13)
HLN, Cooking Channel, H2, Encore Action, IFC (1/31/13)
QVC, Galavision, beIN Espanol, Playboy HD (8/15/13)
    MBC Drama (12/17/15)
    Revolt (12/24/15)

    Friday:
    Univision Deportes (3/15/13)
    Reelz and Ovation (9/26/14)
    mun2 (1/30/15)
BBC World News, WE and Sundance (3/6/15)
    ASPiRE (11/6/15)

None have been on Tuesdays, although that might be because how channels are added. New HD additions replace HD Cinema channels, and Tuesday is new release day, so they probably want to avoid taking down HD Cinema channels on Tuesdays so they can do as many staggered starts as possible for new releases.

Doesn't the cinema channel come down a week or more in advance when the test begins?

Wow thanks for the analysis Kyle. I just seemed to remember a lot of "mid-week" channel additions, because if theres issues at the end of the week it could be overtime, or at the beginning of the week they have to put out fires from the weekend (at least in an IT sysadmin's perspective).

I would have guessed either today, tomorrow or Friday being we are on a quarter end and a new month coming up... great time for a new contract to go in effect with something like GSN.

Yeah the cinema channel typically comes down a week in advance, but they wouldn't take it down Tuesday for a new channel to appear the following Tuesday. But weren't there some long time tests like ION HD was testing for weeks or over a month? Didn't Pac 12 go into testing and then it never became a reality? I'm not sure that all tests are 1 week.

Strange, GSN 233 isn't on my app at all (IOS). There is one in the locals section at 71, though.
