I don't think local KPXN-30 is the actual source of the ION west feed since its OTA programming differs from the national west feed at times as I pointed out the discrepancy once way back in this thread and inkahauts explained.

Moving for ION? I think a much simpler solution is BitTorrent or even before that switching providers or trying to put up an aerial if it was that important.

I want more information on the Mars Science Laboratory rover, Curiosity. I go to NASA's website daily and there isn't nearly enough new information to satisfy me.

    Should I move to Mars?

In my neck of the woods - woodbridge, nj, about 30 miles from the nyc antennas in the empire state building - ion hd is the OTA channel with the strongest signal - and I'm only using a 13+ year old indoor antenna. That said, they have 2 subchannels that I can get, so u can imagine the quality of the picture....

To the person asking for ion hd, is it provided in your local market? Have you tried getting it using an antenna?

Back to anticipation, I have to say I wasn't anticipating directv not to have pac 12 network by now. That really shows Mike White's been deadly serious about trying to control the overal programming costs and, in particular, rsn costs. But I also have to say that pac 12 somewhat shoot themselves in the foot by allowing fox and espn to have game picks #1 and #2 for football. Concerning basketball, who will carry the pac-12 tourney? If not the pac 12 network, then the overall appeal of the pac-12 network for the average American college sports fan, even on the left coast, diminish. Yes, there are the die hards fan out there that can't leave without watching every single football and basketbal game from their alma mater, and those I believe eventually will jump ship if Directv never were to carry the pac-12.

I do expect, however, directv carrying the lakers and the houston rockets networks, because those channels will carry most of these team's regular season games. But I also believe directv will negotiate till the last minute, so that when it's time to talk to the other rsns, they don't end up having to pay for, say, yes, as much as they pay for espn.

Re national hd channels, after getting bbca, fox deportes, espn deportes and, assuming gol tv will no longer be in hd on the spanis back, would be the channels that, if carried in hd, would make me pay for the spanish pak, to get more futbol in hd. I'd take hln, too, 'cause robin meade in hd looks great :)

Greatest decision I ever made in the bar was NOT to get E* and get D* installed..

I laugh at E*'s misfortunes..my sympathies go out to the subs that pay for their service and that are caught in the middle..not the company itself.

In 2005 it was a giant red flag that they didn't have the YES Network..My Bar in the in upper Manhattan bordering the Bronx by a bridge, next to Yankee Stadium...not having the Yankees???...CLICK....eventually they lost the other 2 NY RSN's..wow

    Good Luck E*

now back to D* anticipation...which by the way without the new bird in the air (scheduled for whenever the F to fly). Is it safe to say that anticipation for any more HD on D* is now passe ?

I thought that was the case already before the last flurry of HD channels. Now I think there will be more.

I repeat: What makes you think all local affiliates of ION actually broadcast in HD? Not all of them do.

In Los Angeles they DO have a HD feed available for pickup, but only U-Verse actually picks it up. Dish, DirecTV, Time Warner Cable, and FIOS all do not use the HD feed.

But still, your comments about moving or OTA are not great suggestions. It isn't a great solution to equip all your TV's with rabbit ears or installing a rooftop antenna for 1 channel.

I anticipate it still could be a while before we get ION HD. I just looked up the ratings sweep dates for Nielsen this year. The next one is Oct. 25 - Nov. 21. I see little incentive for Ion Media to settle before then. Maybe DirecTV will cave on whatever the disagreement is over the next few weeks. I'd continue to play chicken for at least a month if I ran Ion Media.

I anticipate watching me some Pac-12 College football in HD this weekend!

I further anticipate that we will have the Pac-12 network "soon" so I can watch more Pac-12 football in the "near future"

I doubt DirecTV has to "cave" over anything regarding ION TV. I suspect they are just as fine having ION in SD, they aren't going to lose customers over it I would suspect, so they will probably just stick to whatever deal they had agreed to in the first place and wait till ION comes around.

And if they don't, well.... DirecTV can use that bandwidth slot for something else. ION HD isn't a dealbreaker for most DirecTV customers.

I agree with you although neither of us knows what the hang up is.

I was simply considering the situation from Ion's point of view. They have no monetary reason to settling before the sweeps period. They might as well hope DirecTV caves before then.

Waiting for a sweeps period makes a lot of sense...getting an HD feed added to a large carrier like HD will cause a bunch of people to tune in, simply because it is a new HD channel (even if they find nothing they like and stop watching the channel after a couple of days).

Not at all. The newish HD channels (TCM, BBCA, NGW, Djr) are being made possible by D* moving to putting 6 HD channels per satellite transponder rather than the previous 5. That's documented fact. The speculation is they are using new encoder technology (I've got a link somewhere to an engineering presentation from a vendor) that became available in the last couple years to do that without sacrificing picture quality (PQ).

The encoder/PQ thing is speculative, in the sense that D* hasn't made an official statement about it, but it has held up so far --none of DBSTalk's many PQ Warriors have shown up with smoking gun screenies on PQ degradation after several months of this.

So, at any rate, the possibility of increasing the number of 6 HD channels per transponders has to rate as "probable".

How many are there? There are 44 of those transponders, and so far only 6 of them have had this done to them (I think --I may have missed one just browsing Sixto's map).

Thus, in theory, 38 (44-6) more "new" HD slots are available to D* that weren't available last year.

Having said that, if the speculation about new encoders is in fact correct, that documentation suggests channel mix per transponder can play a role in whether a specific set of 6 channels are an appropriate grouping to live together in HD harmony on one transponder without sacrificing picture quality. Also speculative, but supporting, is the fact that when D* went to some of these 6 HD per transponder groupings, they didn't just add another channel to an existing grouping of 5, but in fact rejiggered the channel grouping entirely into a new grouping of 6.

So 38 additional is possibly --maybe even very likely-- to be a theoretical max that will not be achieved due to a lack of 44 "perfect channel groupings". But, still, no reason to be pessimistic about the possibility of new HD additions because of bandwidth limitations right now, and for the forseeable future.

I suspect we'll see Ion East HD the week that Ion West (SD) moves to channel 306 this month.

I could be wrong obviously, but that's my prediction! :)

Not everybody can get Ion with an antenna... Coca Cola Kid most likely already learned that... hence why he suggested "moving" this time instead of checking your antenna or getting a better one like last time.

Personally, I can't receive Ion OTA at all, and I hope to have it in HD via DirecTV later this year, but I'm not in any hurry.

Speaking of missing information, Austin and Ally on the Disney Channel still doesn't list the Cast and Crew and the show has been on almost a year. Newer shows Doc McStuffins and Gravity Falls to name two have their Cast and Crew listed.

That's most likely a Tribune Media Services issue... not a DirecTV one though.

There are a lot of programs like that. :(
