I can appreciate your point, but what I can tell you from my own viewing habits is that a channel turning HD regardless if I watch it or not is a good thing. I find that I skip over most SD content and channels because they look so bad on my TV in my living room. I actually give channels a chance when they are HD just to see if I'm missing anything. In fact, my household regularly watches AMC now whereas before we did not watch it at all.

That said, I'm not going to leave D* due to a few missing HD channels because the pros still far outweigh the cons of service. My LiLs will be HD this year and I always have my NFL ST to watch every NFL season. Either way, I will still welcome ANY and ALL HD channels that D* decides to add.

I would like to see the following in HD.

    BBC America
    H2
    RFD TV

That's about all I'd like to see D* add in HD.

Aren't there a few games on now and then that are on non RSN channels that they broadcast in the 700s? I was thinking for example, once in a while a Dodgers game from our local channel 9 would be up, if the other team they where also playing was showing the game on a local channel instead of a RSN. Not very often but once in a while. Does that happen?

Most of the sunday ticket, bandwidth comes from them turning off their ppv channels on Sundays, something they are never going to give up. So Sunday ticket really doesn't affect how many channels or how much space dtv has for Hi Definition channels. It's been like this since day, even the sd versions of Sunday ticket.

If this is true, I vote keep NFL ST (And the VOD channels, if that's what it takes).

That's probably towards the high-end, yes, after you figure in new sports channels and maybe a few more premiums.

Now that we've got TCM HD on the way, I've only got three channels left I really, really want (BBCAHD, DIYHD, H2HD).

Yes, there are others I would be happy to receive, but I really don't find myself grinding my teeth at times over not having them the way I sometimes do over not having those three.

In the past an HD channel would go up in test and then a week later go live. TCMHD has been in test since last Monday. Why do you think they're waiting so long to turn it on this time?

If they are using the new 6 channel/transponder magic encoder, it might just be taking a while to tweak the settings... Just an idea.

But did it take them that long to test E! and TruTv?

E! and trutv was NOT done using the 6 channel per transponder encoder. I believe that davenlr's point was that with a new system in place it might either take longer OR they are being extra careful because of the new system. I don't know if this is true, but it seems reasonable to me.

    E! is the 6th on D12 TP15, and TruTV is the 6th on D11 TP3.

    Patience. Next week.

Hey, if we dump all them Viacom channels there is room for BBC America, H2, DIY, and other HD. :D

(I know, I know, they are not going passed a week or 2 of going black and bring them back on).

I'd prefer for DirecTV to drop Shorts HD.

    Follow that with Fuel HD.

And eliminate west-coast feeds of premium-movie channels which are being carried in HD: HBO, HBO 2, Cinemax, Starz, and Showtime. (Replace four of those with the desired Encore: Encore Action HD, Encore Drama HD, IndiePlex HD, and RetroPlex HD. Bring in the missing Cinemax: OuterMax HD.)

Probably a contractual agreement (with Turner Broadcasting).

Perhaps it's common that, with any programmer, a launch date for a channel addition (SD and/or HD) is specified.

So from another thread it seems DirecTV is "confirming" that it is indeed the 19th it will launch.

How did DirecTV "confirm" it? Well.... a user was searching for a movie that was supposed to show on TCM, and used the search.... and under "upcoming show times" this movie was shown on "TCM" this week, but on both "TCM" and "TCMHD" on July 19th. So the guide data, or at least the SEARCHABLE data is already updated to include TCMHD.

And watch Swanni run away with it now..... "Confirmed, TCMHD will be on DirecTV the 19th!!!" :D :D

I can see people frantically searching for stuff now as soon as Sixto sees something in test to see when it launches. :D

No on the west coast feeds.

I have HBO, I usually come home at 6, spend time with the wife, eat dinner..... and then check and see what shows at the prime time slot of 8 PM on the HBO channels, and catch a good movie.

I don't want to have to program in my DVR and record TOMORROW's movie at 5 PM because that is when it is 8 PM on the east.

Likewise, east coasters probably won't like it if the prime time movie starts at 11 PM.

Keep the west coast feeds intact. I actually would wish for MORE west coast feeds, I already have many recordings starting at 5/6pm on many channels to record the prime time shows on cable channels. It's not uncommon that if I do want to record something from HBO, that I actually HAVE to use the west coast feed to record it because I am already recording 2 programs at the 5PM PST/8PM EST time slot.

    Hi Maartena.

    If you believe the Guide...

Using the "View Upcoming" feature, TCM is in HD now!

Every upcoming film as of 12:30 EDT on TCM has 2 listings: TCM and TCMHD, although the TCM HD has an asterisk infront of it.

No idea what any of this means, however!

Asterisks in front of the numbers are what test channels are listed as...

My local CBS didn't launch with the rest of my locals in 2010, but a few months later... and I was able to watch it days before it launched.

So it seems that as of next week sometime we'll have TCMHD. Cool. I never ever watch that channel but I probably do so from time to time when it launches in HD.

Asterisk means the channel is in test.

You can accurately predict when the channel launches when you start finding movies on the channel without the asterisk in front of it.

So even though DirecTV still has to keep their mouth shut (and play the "we have no information on that yet" card), the launch date.... can apparently be found "hidden in plain sight!" :D
