Without PPV, DirecTV carries ~161 HD channels. What is left to convert? ~40 channels with many of them not available in HD? I don't like the term "bottom of the barrel" but it is getting to the point where all that is left is the best five underrated channels ever and those other channels nobody cares about. (The best five varying based on which poster is making the list.) Beyond conversion the only channels left are channels DirecTV does not carry in SD.

This year (2013) they have already added 16 channels. That is the most channels in one year since 2010 (40 additions). But there can always be more! :)

As a former BrightHouse customer (in St. Pete, FL), I was surprised by the robustness of its HD lineup, inlcuding several channels I'd like DirecTV to acquire including Miltary, Indieplex and Retroplex. I also note BrightHouse carries Military History, albeit in SD; I'm uncertain if it is available in HD but, should that occur, would love for DirecTV to make it available as well.

    James Long,

Every carried standard definition feed of a given programer will eventually be made available in high definition. That's not only my take on DirecTV but with regard to all providers of cable-television programming. (Here is a link to Alan Gordon's third-quarter list for 2013: @ http://www.dbstalk.com/topic/205985-directv-hd-channel-anticipation-official-q3-13-thread/#entry3153155 .)

The basics of these are the ones to which I mostly give focus because there is a mix that is producing original materials along with serving particular demographic groups. For example, the kids should be getting The Hub HD and PBS Kids Sprout HD. I lose track of launched HD, but some have singled out here recently Nick Jr. HD. The teens and young adults—the target audience for music-video programming—should be getting Fuse HD and MTV2 HD. Women should be getting Oxygen HD, Style Network HD, and We TV HD—along with the home-shopper services starting with Home Shopping Network HD. Men, with interests in so many sports games and activities, can make an argument for overdue Outdoor Channel HD and Sportsman Channel HD. (And, though I don't find any of my area providers carrying it, a case can be made for Universal Sports HD.) Viewer interest in non-premium movie fare may single out FX Movie Channel HD, Reelz Channel HD, and Sundance Channel HD (which, like others before it, has become hotter with originally-produced fare like the dramatic series Rectify and the prominently Emmy nominated miniseries Top of the Lake). There are general entertainment programmers such as GSN HD, Military Channel HD, Ovation HD, TV One HD, and Uplifting Television HD. And don't forget the news/public interest programming of C-Span HD and C-Span 2 HD. This is only part of it. I didn't mention any programmers not at all carried by DirecTV (and not even in standard, let alone high, def).

I came here in 2010. Many of us forum posters were complaining back then about the lack of basic-cable programmers' high def not being made available to us by our provider, DirecTV. In 2011, just one basic-cable programmer was added by DirecTV: AMC HD. It was in 2012, DirecTV started playing catch up: BBC America HD, DIY Network HD, E! Entertainment Television HD, Nat Geo WILD HD, truTV HD, and Turner Classic Movies HD. (This isn't mentioning the brand-new programmers who debuted in 2012: beIN Sport HD and Disney Junior HD. Add to this the broadcast network of east-coast Ion Television HD.) 2013 saw basic-cable additions especially in the first half of the year: Bloomberg Television HD, Cooking Channel HD, Headline News HD, H2 HD, Independent Film Channel HD, Investigation Discovery HD, LIfetime Movie Network HD, Oprah Winfrey Network HD, and TV Land HD. In fact, I am not mentioning everything (this is spur-of-the-moment recounting on my part).

Though I do not want to make a point of comparing one cable-television provider to the next, a salute to DirecTV can be made with the fact that it added and carries Disney Junior HD and TV Land HD because, in this instance, two big rivals—Dish Network and Comcast—are not carrying them in high def. (In the case of Comcast, it is not carrying those programmers' HD system wide.) I am appreciative of this.

At this point, I'm thinking there is precious space for what else can be added in HD before the launch of D14 in 2014. I would like to see at least ten more (if manageable) come our way before we see a new satellite become launched. And, despite there being only two "For Women" (and zero "For Men") programmers singled out, this is a non-personal and suggested list:
    233 GSN HD
    235 Style Network HD
    238 Reelz Channel HD
    240 Home Shopping Network HD
    258 FX Movie Channel HD
    294 The Hub HD
    295 PBS Kids Sprout HD
    333 MTV2 HD
    339 Fuse HD
    557 Sundance Channel HD

I want SV locals in HD. Especially since my local ABC is fake-HD and the SV ABC (all 3 of them offered in parts of my DMA) are all REAL full time HD 24/7, but we don't get to enjoy it in HD. And this wouldn't waste any bandwidth because they are ALREADY IN THE SYSTEM!!!!

Eventually ... but they are not there yet. Thanks for the list of 22 channels that are available in HD and could (theoretically) be added immediately (with space being the only consideration). And thanks for including CSPANs in the list as "everything in HD" should be EVERYTHING - including public interest channels. (Add TBN and any other PIs that have a HD feed.)

This year's 16 includes one premium (Playboy ... DirecTV's first dedicated HD porn channel, IIRC) and one RSN (FS San Diego which was launched earlier this year). Otherwise it has been a "basic" kind of year. (Seven of the channels are in Entertainment.)

As I mentioned - it has been a good year, but there can always be more!

bright house in central florida has both military and pentagon channels in hd. on september 1, they will also have universal sports in hd. problem is their picture quality stinks. obviously, more concern about quantity than quality.

I don't think there is one provider of cable-television programming who is "there yet." Bright House Networks is interesting, in that it seems to have more bandwidth than anyone else; either that or Bright House is heavily compressing so that it can turn out the numbers. (It carries even ShopNBC HD in my area Michigan system.)

Alan Gordon's list, which I linked, is very useful.

And I think 2012 and 2013 have made for two good years for basic-cable HD additions by DirecTV. (Thus far.)

I anticipate more talk about how DirecTV will spread The Pac-12 Networks across the Channel Guide. A deal is coming--- I can feel it. (no basis in fact) :hi:

I'am a DIY calibrator and I calibrated my Panasonic Plasma last year via my blu-ray and it looked fantastic but when I would watch HDTV programming via BHN (cisco 8742hdc stb) which I had at the time, the heavy compression was very noticeable on fleshtones as people would look more reddish.

But when I recently got Directv my same calibration now via Genie HR-44 looked fantastic and fleshtones were more natural and blu-ray like.

Something has happened to BHN picture quality in recent years as it was not as bad a few years ago.It could be all the HD additions they been cramming on SDV or it could be how their stb handles mpeg4 encoding.

I hope Directv does not start watering their HD feed to add more channels.I would like for them to do it in a more pure manner to continue to uphold thier reputation for oustanding picture quality.

Speaking of the Pentagon channel, D* was suppose to add that like two years ago, whatever happened with that?

i believe there picture is overly compressed. they have switched digital video like most other cable companies. yet, bhn here in central florida has more hd than any other cable company i am aware of. i have it as backup to my dtv. but the picture quality is comprised of washed out color and pixelation. its difficult to watch on my 64 inch sammy!

I'd really like to see GSN HD added soon to watch that new quiz show in HD. Looked great in HD on an HD commercial I saw for it on another channel.

The only 4 channels I am interested in for new HD are the Ovation Channel, which continues to produce high end original drama series and great arts and culture coverage.

The Sundance Channel would be a good add, but they have commercials non-stop, so its value is limited.

I am hoping the Esquire Channel gets picked up in HD when it begins in a few weeks. And I hope Al Jazeera America will also be picked up in HD.

There are a number of decent channels, up on C Band that are both HD and SD, that Directv should think about adding. Stuff like Reelz, COZI, Movies, Pentagon TV, MeTV, AntennaTV, THISTV, plus others. To just bring in shopping channels, in HD, is a waste of more then just HD programming. It's also entertainment value. Time for them to start reconsidering all of the Shopping/Sports/Ethnic/Spanish channels that they want to continue to add, and add something for the average Joe out there.
