The logic is very simple. Other than the local teams game coverage, the RSNs are largely just duplicates of each other that all show the same programming, and all of the local games coverage is blacked out nationally and sold separately in various sports programming packages.

So counting the RSNs in the national channel counts is very misleading given that excluding the blacked out programming, the RSNs are just dozens and dozens and dozens of channels that essentially all show the same programming.

That's why lists that genuinely try to compare true national channel counts don't count all of the RSNs.

Yeah, I wouldn't mind having GSN HD sometime down the road. But not before my other wants. :)

If :( D* ever adds E! HD, I know where I will definitely be spending my Sunday nights. " Sunday nights were meant for E! (HD). "

BTW, do we really "need" HLN HD '.' J/K, the more HD the better.

I know ;) of 2 HD channels D* will be adding soon, QVC HD & HSN HD.

...except for the fact that the RSN's show a substantial amount of college sports games which are not blacked out.

Hey! I actually like DirecTV. They are a profitable company making a lot of people happy. They have compelling advertising and have added a fair number of new channels this year. That doesn't mean I have to bury my head in the sand and say they're perfect - neither company is.

    I agree. Completely.

Two and a half channels of men chasing footballs around a field using their heads and not their hands (unless one is the goalie).

Actually, if one were supposed to anticipate more channels in August one has done a good job. Most here have done an excellent job of anticipation. Hopefully in the next six weeks the continued anticipation will give you something else to watch in HD.

    This thread dies ~Sep. 30.

People will have to find things to be 4Q unhappy about. But I think they will. For as long as there are open slots on D12 that will be the primary form of unhappiness. I expect that to last into 1H next year.

Then after that they'll switch to being unhappy about how those slots are used (we already have a minor chord of that in this thread, but it will move up to the primary at that point).

Personally, give me AMCHD, BBCAHD, DIYHD, TMCHD, NASAHD, and all three CSPANs in HD and I won't have anything to complain about on programming.

Somewhat tangentially related --but related-- when last I heard the MDUs were supposed to get their D12 upgrade by now. Does anyone know if that happened?

Why related? Because the wailing from customers who can't get the new HD *at all* must certainly be at least something of a brake on D*s eagerness to add new HD channels until those people won't start up a new round of pained squeals at every new addition they can't see.

Disregarding the 59 (or more*) channels that DirecTV carries in SD, with HD versions available either now or by the end of the year (supposedly), but not on DirecTV, as well as the 29 channels they don't currently carry at all (including some of the Cinemax channels which possibly has a shot of making it to DirecTV), there are still 32 SD channels on DirecTV who hasn't announced plans for an HD channel yet.

    Disclaimers:

    1. The 59 (or more*) is due to the fact that I'm not very knowlegeable when it comes to RSNs or adult programming, so there may in fact be more channels available now or by the end of the year.
    2. Of the 29 channels they don't carry at all, most probably do not stand a chance, but the Cinemax package needs to be filled out (and this is coming from someone who would rather most of the bandwidth go to base package channels), and a few of the channels are owned by Starz, and DirecTV's only missing one Showtime channel, so it might launch when available, and the two Sony channels might have a decent shot.
    3. The 32 channel number might also be more given the fact that I am not very knowledgable regarding the RSNs and adult programming. Some of the 32 number probably won't be high-demand channels, but there are still several channels that would be anticipated.
    4. Aside from the CW and ION channels, I did not count West Coast feeds among my counts. I also did not count the foreign language channels in the 400s among my numbers.

I know I'm jumping in late on this but D* still has more National HD than E* or anyone else for that matter and that is not even including PPV.

The real question is why isn't D* finishing the HD battle and just adding another 40 channels. If the did (and they could) there would be no question of which provider is the provider when it comes to HD period. Also why is it that Directv seems to be the only one not pushing forward a tv anywhere solution?

I ask everyone here this... Will Directv add 20 HD channels by the end of the year? Thats is only five a month Sept. - Dec.

So do you see them adding that many?
Will you be satisfied by that level of progress?
If they do add say five a month, what do you think they add?

In purchasing the mlb, nba, nhl sports package games arent blacked out.
See no difference in HBO where if not purchased its blacked out.

& as mentioned you "conveniently" didnt mention the college games which are not blacked out.

Mr. Spock (original or prime) would both say your logic is flawed.

Ken H over at AVS seems to be missing one key element. RSN's broadcast regional sports...nationally. They are national HD channels which consist of regional sports. They should be counted and they will be. The list won't be ready until tomorrow, but you can let them know over there that we will make up for what they have failed to recognize. It will be a list for current and potential customers of both DBS providers. It won't be slanted more towards one than the other. We will provide all the information so that people can come to their own conclusions. The folks over there are more concerned with leveling the playing the field in favor of cable providers than they are with providing accurate data.

Our list will be built around the input from all who wish to provide it, rather than a list ruled by only a select few.

    Nobody was denying that...

    What 40 would they add?!

There is reason to believe DirecTV may indeed be pushing for a TV Everywhere solution. I personally have no interest in it, but for those that do, mazel tov!

    Depends on what 20 channels.

On your list you posted, I would gain 6 channels I care about... only three of which I'm truly anticipating... and I'd still be missing the two channels I care about the most.

~Alan~~~~~~~~Who just reported the local issues over the phone AGAIN...
