You know what occurred to me the other day?! The amount of folks who apparently watch AMC in SD on DirecTV. Seriously! Check out the "What's Hot" TVApp... AMC is a FREQUENT channel on the MOVIE section.

Well... he may not have specifically stated that there wouldn't be any more HD this month, but I do believe my GUESS has just been shot down... :(

On the plus side... I guess there's a chance that getting HD-LIL won't be the only Festivus I get in August...

I wonder if it will be the same week...

Well... I shouldn't have opened my big mouth...

Yeah, that news was a bit disheartening.

Yeah and it also says most other HD feeds are ###-1, and it's missing a lot of overflow channels. Stupid summer interns.

So, after spending hundreds of millions of dollars in building and launching a satellite whose primary purpose was "additional HD channels"....

after announcing beginning Sept. 2009 ad nauseaum and everywhere possible (and for 8 continuous months thereafter) "Soon Capacity for Over 200 HD Channels.....

after having 3 years to figure out which HD channels' license fees needed to be negotiated and signed ....and actually doing it...

after having 3 years to figure out what business plan/strategic deals needed to be in place in order to reach agreement with all the top HD networks still missing....and actually accomplishing it ...

and after falling seriously behind DISH (by over 30) in carriage of the highest-rated HD networks missing...

we now receive the news of a "small festivus" in August and "potentially" some more channels later this year....nothing guaranteed... Huh ???

    Preliminary Conclusion:

The capital expense DTV guys who approved D12 in 2007 did not talk to the DTV bean-counters running the show today who care foremost about their quarterly numbers to Wall Street and thus, never business planned adequately for how D12's additional HD capacity would impact their numbers with new HD license fees.

The bean-counters probably fought the capital guys all the way (for D12's approval) and now are exacting their revenge... the "tango" being the preferred "dance" (negotiation) method, slow and methodical, which keeps pushing expenses far into future quarters ....

Makes you wonder why all the bother, time, money and efforts behind D12 if it all was going to turn into a stock-watching game... ergo all the new gimmicks of 3D, hundreds of PPV's and VOD's to keep the analysts excited.....

New HD license fees do not excite the Wall Streeters and that's why we will likely see D12's new HD be a trickle and not an avalanche and mostly of the cheaper channels, like GOL instead of Fox Soccer Channel....

Perhaps someone can pull up all of Satellite Racer's posts from 2009 related to the great depth, variety, quality and quantity of HD channels which were going to be delivered by D12...and how happy everyone was going to be....

Count me in with those who were NOT thrilled at the end of June. At least now the die is cast regarding what we have to NOT anticipate.

Like totally. BIG deal D12 ... we get a handfull (VERY few in the basic area), with as many or MORE PAY PER VIEWS! ... and trickle time for many months ... IF ... they get their contracts done?

There's less than 10 "biggies" (most Dish Network has) that would go far in covering the widely desired channels. Why are THEY so elusive?

I guess I got caught up in the "when D12 is up we'll see Direct LUNGE ahead of the pack" syndrome.

That was intended to be a prediction, which satelliteracer was kind enough to confirm five hours later. :D

To the degree there was a "source" involved in me being willing to make the prediction in the first place, it was a post from another D* employee in the D10 amelioration thread (or possibly the D12 thread --there was a lot of cross-talk going on there at the time) awhile back saying that what he was hearing in the hallways at D* was that they intended to load D12 up over the coming months rather than using excess capacity to "load balance" across D10/D12 for redundancy/backup purposes.

Better yet, let's enjoy our most recent additions and look forward to new ones in the future, along with thanking Satelliteracer for his updates.

I do wonder if the MRU situation has some impact here. Those folks can't "see" D12 just yet, and somewhere I believe it was predicted (by report from a new MRU customer) as August before the firmware update would be available to allow them to do so. That might have some impact on why D* lead with a premiums-heavy package of additions, and in not feeling a rushing need to add more until the MRU people are squared-away. You've got to know a goodly chunk of those people have a burning feeling of injustice right now that would only be added to by even more HD channels they can't watch.

Where would the SD subs get the equipment to receive HD channels? They would need to have all of their DVRs and receivers replaced.

There are some major inaccuracies in your statement..

First....carriage agreements are not negotiated by any provider until the capacity to deliver them is in place...since pricing changes each year...and since these agreements assure the ability to deliver. IF something would have happened to D12, for example, there go all those contracts you thought you could sign up for 3 years ago. No one does this - makes no sense.

Second...the debate about "falling behind Dish" depends about what form of math you use, and what channels providers count. Many public media sources indicate Dish uses "fuzzy math" and counts their channels in such a way that borders on deception....so your "gap" count isn't even close.

Lately...Dish's count is going backwards (down).
    Thanks for your chart.

Six HD channels that people actually seem to watch, based on your statement of double digit gains. I noticed AMC HD isn't on that list.

Looks like the end of the world is further away than what some others might try to lead people to believe...my guess is that if we had all of those, and AMC HD...there would still be people whining about one channel here or one channel there. A sad commentary actually.

    Source?

    (plus, D11 had capacity) :D

Lastly, you mean to tell me DIRECTV worked the whole TRAVHD deal AFTER D12 went live? I find that real hard to believe.
