That's a shame. It would be cool if you could get THEM to pay for the repair.

Funny thing ... the company planning the launch is the one planning the addition of new channels. They know how long they have been planning the launch. They also know roughly how long it will be until the next launch.

It's not Congress that will fix this. The problem is Canadian networks broadcasting content that is licensed to someone else in the US. The channels would be riddled with blackouts. The same problem exists for British TV. Too much overlap. As long as the US networks hold the rights to the programs you won't be able to see them on Canadian channels in the US.

That's true, and I agree. I was thinking more in terms of
#'s of nationals released for a festivus, since the original poster was thinking maybe only 1 channel would be introduced. BTW, I do think we will have more than one channel introduced in August.

If I were a betting man, I'd be sitting on 3-5.

    Sat,

Your comment on the need for an agreement between D* and content provider got me thinking about my favorite hoped for HD channel, G4. I always assumed that if D* was already holding an agreement to carry a channel in SD, then an option to carry that same channel in HD was most likely already provided for from the original agreement. After reading your post, I am starting to question that assumption.

After all that, do you think there any chance G4 is going to be one of the August additions?

You aren't comparing Apples to Apples..

The Spanish channels are designed to serve a huge community within the USA. We aren't talking about a different country with its own broadcast contracts for programming that directly conflict with US contracts.

I.E. if a Candian channels has the rights in Canada to broadcast "Friends" or "The Big Bang Theory" , they can only show it in Canada. If they even thought of being carried on DirecTV they would have to broadcast either separate programming or black out anything that had conflicting rights with US Broadcasters.

You are dealing with 2 separate countries, with their own broadcast laws and contractual agreements. The channels in the 400's are US Broadcasters.

Sort of. A lot of the international channels are really from their countries (Mexico, china, Italy, etc) but they have broadcast arms in the US. We used to have a Canadian channel (forgot the name) but it folded. Is that the one sold to Al Gore?

Some of the Spanish channels are American. Some are not.

Comcast in Southeastern Michigan carries CBET (CBC Windsor). It even carries NHL games the Red Wings are in without blackouts.

Yep, those in Buffalo, Detroit and I think Seattle can get Canadian channels. They really need a CBC-America.

In those markets a decent antenna should be able to pick up CBC OTA ... carrying them on cable is practically a local.

CBET and CJIC are Significantly Viewed in several Michigan counties. That would make them a must carry on the Comcast system (where listed). Satellite? DirecTV might be able to carry the channels where they are SVs. As long as it is in a station's coverage area there shouldn't be too much of an issue with rights ... although anything can be lost in negotiations.

Don't forget Dish owns a 12% stake in G4 due to the TechTV merger.

No doubt, that would be a great improvement to the DirecTV lineup, if it existed. We have a lot of International programing from countries south of us, why not the one to the north. I have read the major issue would be the broadcasting of programs that are also shown in the US. But, I don't see why they can't put together a channel of their own produced programing, and distribute it to the US market. Border communities can pick it up OTA, but the rest of us would like to see some Canadian programing, also.

I remember years ago when I had my C-Band system, we used to watch a lot of CBC and CTV programing.

I think Comcast owns all of G4 now. Paul Allen owned ZDTV/TechTV, along with Charlie... Sure miss TechTV :(

If D* had the option to carry G4 HD in the original agreement, it wont matter who owns it. *fingers crossed*

Guys, if the domestic tango is already a PITA I can imagine an international tango involving Canadian and American regulations.

I'm officially pissed at D* now. I've been waiting along time for some new basic channels to go HD on D* and have watched loads of PPV HD, premium HD, and 3D channels go up. The balance between $ channels and channels I can afford(ie Part of my package) going HD has become intolerable. Time for D* to start adding HD that every one can watch not just those that pay extra for PPV or a premium.

How many years and satellites must we wait for.
