DIRECTV HD Channel Anticipation (Official Q3 2010 Thread)

Please use this thread to discuss your feelings about upcoming national HD channels.

This thread will not be as tightly moderated as the rest of the site, but here's the tradeoff... in exchange for your being able to rant a bit more, you can be assured that absolutely no one at DIRECTV will be using this thread for reference.

You can ask for new HD all you want, but DIRECTV's marketing department knows that the 100-150 contributors to this thread are only a small part of the 18,000,000 total subscribers.

Please remember that all forum rules are still in effect, and please do not "bump" this thread. Other threads that do nothing but anticipate HD channels for which there is no information will be closed.

Funny, based on the noise from this tread you would think that AMC would be no. 1. Though a fan, didn't see Travel channel listed either. All the clamor over BET HD being added earlier in the year sorta shows why, by the numbers.

Someone brought that up the other day, and I answered that they were correct. However, upon thinking about it, it gets complicated...

The EPIX channels are in a different category than the other PREMIUM CHANNELS, so in that regard, I'm hesitant to put them in that category.

Alan seems that EPIX-HD and EPIX2 are on the same footing with Cineamax. As on Direct. Cineamax has a west coast feed only. Don't see the differnce.

I have a Blockbuster literally across the street from me but I haven't been there in years. Easier just to watch premiums. I don't have a BD player either.
Same here. Have Redbox around the corner and can't stand waiting for 20 minutes plus to get a few new releases and the "same" movies playing on HBO, Starz, EPIX or maybe, rarely on Showtime.

Nice chart with tons of interesting details. If Dish wasn't so bad in customer service I probally would take another spin with them. The prem. movie diffrence is pretty obvious.
Except for Showtime and Starz and really if you look at the typical premium channels (HBO, Cinemax, Showtime and Starz) D* has 21 where as E* has 18 (from that list) :)

We got an XBox 360 and barely play it.
I've had a PS3 for some time, rarely "play it" (if at all). But I do use it for watching Blu-Ray movies, streaming Netflix, and streaming music from my PC to my surround system. I'd think about trying to set it up to do Pandora INternet Radio too except I've already got XM in the system........

???

I've found Netflix to be a very useful addition to my D* subscription (I've got Premier with HD/DVR service, don't do extra sports programming).

Between "regular" programming, premium channels, D* VOD, Netflix streaming, and Netflix filling the orders I place in my queue ("only" have a couple hundred titles in my queue ) when I sit down to watch "TV", I'm reasonably assured I'll find something I want to watch.

And if all else fails, I've got about 900 DVD's on the shelf in my den.:D

My wife questions why I'm signed onto so much, she tends to watch things like Survivor, Hells Kitchen, etc. and goes to bed at 8pm (has to leave for work at 5am M-TH). On the other hand, I'm retired and although I have plenty of other things to keep me occupied.....I do tend to make time for reading and watching movies.

She didn't care much about HD programming until I put a 65" Mitsi set in the family room, after that it was easy to sell her on a 32" flat panel for the master bedroom......

Sony lost all credibility on that front when they announced the removal of the ability to boot another OS. Imagine how happy the USAF was: they had just purchased several hundred PS3 for a computing cluster using that feature.

Future proof? I think not.
I think I read about THAT, didn't effect the AF at all since the units were being used for a specific task, didn't require an update to Sony's latest OS so that they could access the Playstation Network and stores....

I was with Dish for 8 months and had to replace 722k and 612, twice! Not fun at all. They can keep their equipment. The HD channels was sweet, but not if you don't have solid dvr's to back it up.

I have been keeping a close eye on FearNet as I am a horror buff. Though the channel has plans for an October 1st launch date, they have yet to secure any broadcast agreements with any cable or sat firm... even those they have On Demand service thru now.

This concerns me. The economics may just not be right for another niche channel right now as shown clearly by the continual postponement of Chiller's upgrade to HD.

DirecTV offers MoreMax as well...

Also, you do realize that EPIX and EPIX2 are two different channels, and EPIX2 isn't a West Coast feed, right?!

As far as my point about the differences in EPIX goes, I was referring to the fact that EPIX offers more "wiggle room" regarding pricing and packaging than Cinemax and some of the OTHER premiums do. For instance:

Verizon FIOS: EPIX1 (SD & HD) $9.99 mo.
Dish Network: EPIX1 & EPIX2 Included in their version of the HD Extra Package ($10.00)

Greenberg wants operators to include Epix in their packages of digital, movie or HD channels - it wouldn't appear as a separate charge on customers' bills the way premium services usually do.
Viacom, Lionsgate, MGM to launch Epix, a new channel

Similar story but all my issues happened in 60-days. I broke the 2-year contract because of bad recievers along with horrible customer service. CSR's from India who had no clue. Had to go to Colo. BBB and FTC to break contract and get refund. What broke my back was a 30-day wait for tech to come out to see why units kept dying. Will never drink Charlie E's kool-aid again.

I'd love it if Epix 1 and Epix 2 were added to the HD Extra pack. Maybe SatRacer can chime in.
After reading USAToday link noted above from Alan seems the EPIX pricing would have made adding them easy. Yes I know there are always 2-sides to every story but to offer pricing less than ESPN seems like a slam dunk to add. (Their online movies are a plus also)
