While all winners were non-traditional cable MSOs, not all non-traditional cable MSOs were winners. :)

They did better in other areas ... for example, they added four basic HD channels. One can now get 72 HD channels in their $70 package. Meanwhile DirecTV added premium HD channels, including six HD premium movie channels DISH had since 2008. (Both companies remained profitable if that counts for anything.)

But this isn't supposed to be about DirecTV vs anyone on the quarterly reports ... it is supposed to be about what DirecTV is or isn't doing in adding HD for their customers. The only quarterly report that matters in this thread is how many HD channels have been added, and what HD channels are coming and when. :D

No basics have seen their HD feeds, carried only in SD, get added since June 2010 by DirecTV. (Among them: HALMRK HD, MSNBC HD, and WGN HD.)

Right now, the list of what is nationally available in HD, but carried only in SD by DirecTV, stands as follows.…

    204 HLN HD
    230 DIY HD
    232 COOK HD
    233 GSN HD
    (more than half-owned by DirecTV)
    235 Style HD
    236 E! HD
    238 REELZ HD
    240 HSN HD
    246 truTV HD
(briefly, in March 2011; apparently coming, regularly, later in 2011)
    251 OXYGEN HD
    253 LMN HD
    254 AMC HD
    256 TCM HD
    258 FMC HD
    260 We HD
    264 BBCAM HD
    271 HInt'l HD
    272 LOGO HD
    273 TVGN HD
    274 OVAT HD
    275 QVC HD
    279 OWN HD
    283 NGWILD HD
    285 ID HD
    289 NASA HD
    294 TheHub HD
    295 SPROUT HD
    301 NICKJR HD
(launched in HD on May 16, 2011, according to Wikipedia.org)
    313 JTV HD
    328 TVONE HD
    330 CENTRC HD
    338 gmc HD
    339 Fuse HD
    345 RFD HD
    350 CSPAN HD
    351 CSPAN2 HD
    353 BLOOM HD
    370 EWTN HD
    371 TCC HD
    372 TBN HD
    377 TCT HD

    404 GALA HD
    559 IFC HD
    605 SPRTSM HD
    606 OUTCH HD

Notes: Outdoor Channel is in a sports package by DirecTV. (Some other providers have it in basics like USA Network and TNT.) Regional sports Mountain West Sports Network (the mtn.) is not yet carried [full time] in HD by DirecTV. I'm not including ION, because of its affiliates (whereas national east- and west-coast feeds are carried in SD by DirecTV). And MTV2, which Wikipedia.org was listing weeks ago as a coming HD launch for September 2011 (and which I had included previously), no longer appears at the site for HD programming in the United States (link, below).

Nice list APB101. Just one note -- the Mtn-HD is carried part time by Directv. There were a few games in HD last year. Looked pretty darn good.

Would like to see TCM, NatGeo Wild, and Ovation in HD. As I just re-uped my contract for some new equipment, obviously I can deal with not having any of these channels.

Yes, Wikipedia.org says the mtn. is available only in part time; DirecTV guide lists it an Alternative; and what I'll do is revise to state it is not carried full time in HD.

Surprised we don't have those 2 yet, being D* is the sports leader and both are in the sports pack, which require extra fees.

Hopefully this will answer Satelliteracer's repeated questions about what "very few" channels are available that aren't already carried.

It probably wouldn't hurt to mention separately some of the channels that are only available in HD or don't have SD carriage on DIRECTV as those shouldn't necessarily be off the table.

In anticipation of my install of 2 HR24s on Tuesday, I'm now officially anticipating that D* get BBCA and AMC in HD...

Or am I jumping the gun??? :)

negative in what sense? They made more $$$. They lost subscribers, but wall street cares about $$$.

I bet you'll get the HDGUI before those two channels. :D

You can certainly anticipate, but apparent bandwidth constraints and the track record of the last couple of years suggests that you'll be disappointed for at least two years.

Aren't you with a different provider? If that's the case, I wouldn't recommend switching to DirecTV until it brings in BBC America and AMC in high definition — along with at least 13 more that I have listed in the missing basics; which may not happen until after the 2013 launch of D14. (And this is coming from a 13-year subscriber who referred two relatives, prior to 2007, to DirecTV.)

I'm not taking that bet! Nor will I take any bets on whether the HDGUI will be faster on the older HRs either. I heard all those 'the next upgrade will be faster' stories when I have my HR21 a couple years ago...

And of course, those stories should all have started with 'once upon a time'!! :hurrah:

You can only be disappointed IF you actually believed that D* was gonna get either or both of those up any time soon. I don't.

I'm switching because my adult son wanted to be able to watch his sainted San Diego Chargers and he will pay the difference in cost as appropriate.

And honestly, I only watch Walking Dead and Breaking Bad on AMC and on BBCA - Dr. Who, Primeval and Outcasts and an occasional odd show. For those few shows, I can tolerate D*'s crappy SD. I will admit that I most likely will grumble a lot when watching those shows...

Yes, I am with Dish now. And if it was just me, I wouldn't be making the switch. But my adult son wants more sports in HD and is willing to pay the extra costs involved. And I only watch a few shows on those two channels. And as for your list, well I don't watch those other channels at all, so I'll never know if they come on in HD or not.

Kind of you to explain; I just don't mind being blunt with anyone who might (though you didn't specifically) ask the question, "Do you recommend DirecTV?"

Fair point....then we should strip out all other posts here about what other MSO's are adding then as comparison...right? ;) What's good for the goose....
