Five basics? Five RSNs? A combination of either?

Better standing that what? They beat all the MSOs who are established. The only MSOs that did better did so by expanding their build out area.

My point was to counter the people who had been saying there would be no more HD before D14 launched. That all the space is gone.

The truth is more HD can launch before D14 and 2014. So looks like you missed my point, cuz they don't have to wait for 2014.

    Cheers,
    Tom

I think to make many people happy it would be 5 basics.

Thought I'm not sure how much overlap there is between the "DBSTalk 5" and the "General DIRECTV Customer 5". :)

    Cheers,
    Tom

There is that. But those costs are sort of "fixed". There is a little wiggle room, in essence it costs roughly xxx to setup a fiber link, and roughly xxx to setup a satellite up-link to get a channel from the Pentagon, to DirecTV.

I doubt they are "tangoing" about that, there isn't a whole lot to discuss. Sure there is the "who pays for it" factor, but I just don't think they couldn't come to an agreement there that really warrants further "tangoing".

I wonder how TV Land would have done in the poll had it been around at the time of the poll...

Sure, they can launch a few more. They have capacity for at least 10 channels I would say if they shuffle around efficiently and drop some cinema's.

But they should always keep some capacity in reserve. Before 2014 arrives, a lot can, and will happen as far as channel launches go.

We already know that the Los Angeles area will get two new RSN's to carry the Lakers, and maybe..... (in the 2013 season) the Dodgers, and that would pretty much make it a "must carry" if you don't want to lose any clients in the greater L.A. area. We already know that Houston is getting 1 new RSN that will carry the Houston Rockets NBA team, and the Houston Astro's MLB team. They are probably less pressured to carry this network, but I do think a lot of Texans in de Houston DMA will be pissed if they don't.

Sports bars don't want to install cable along side DirecTV for the local RSN's, so they will definitely be pissed, as local teams make or break their business, so they WILL install the carrier that carries them. And if the local cable guy offers MLB, NBA, and NHL, but not NFL sports packages.... why not strike a deal for everything except NFL, and keep NFL with DirecTV for the football season (and the specials, like Wimbldon, US Open etc).

So yeah they probably have some capacity, and some channels will be launched. It is - once again - VERY easy to make that claim. But I do believe that DirecTV has to do some serious capacity management.

I think this new "push" system is going to be used for delivery of LOCAL ads on basic CONUS channels, as they have announced they will do local commercial inserting on one of the latest investor meetings, so we are not going to see those channels back. My guess, since they will DVR's only, is that they will "push" local commercials to a certain amount of reserved space on DVR's, and then show them when they are called for by a channel. At least.... that would make the most sense to me.

FUD? I don't think so. My guess is probably closer to reality. Hopefully I am wrong.

Earlier this summer, we brought you news of Discovery's plans to launch a new channel targeting "upscale men" called Velocity, with part of its focus being custom, classic, and vintage cars. Today, the channel officially announced its launch date: October 4.

    PA - Berks...
Sports bars here have Comcast AND DirecTV. But then again I'm in the Philly market. Comcast Sportsnet FTW. If we can do it, so can LA. It's the cost of doing business.

How about you keep your politics to your self and off the site. The Pentagon Channel isn't about war anyway. You would have a better argument with the Military Channel.

Don't tell me, you read that swami article and think it has merit that directv is loosing customers because of not adding more hd. At this point, HD channel count isn't going to help or hurt either Directv or Dish really. Some cable companies, sure, but not Directv or Dish. NO one has all channels.
