There's only 1 channel I watch that isn't in HD and that's GSN. But since I watch only the old game shows on it and record Match Game to DVD I'd just as soon them not add the hd of it personally.

I look at HLN once in a blue moon so that in hd would be nice I guess.

I second for TCM in HD. At least TCM is 24 hours, with no ads, no infomercials, unlike that recently HD add.

It is a bit odd they don't have that one, guess it proves that it isn't always because someone doesn't want to Tango.

    … Of course!

This thread has been active in quarterly periods for a couple years. And DirecTV has been asleep on the matter of HD "basics." It's been quiet here, recently, perhaps because ridiculously-long-overdue AMC HD (ch. 254) finally came in on Sept. 9. I also question whether a report about the next satellite launch — which we thought would take place in 2013; but apparently it won't happen until 2014 — has had an impact.

Missing Basics (DirecTV-carried SDs, with nationally available HDs):
    204 HLN HD
    230 DIY HD
    232 COOK HD
    233 GSN HD
    235 Style HD
    236 E! HD
    238 REELZ HD
    240 HSN HD
    246 truTV HD
    251 OXYGEN HD
    253 LMN HD
    256 TCM HD
    258 FMC HD
    260 WE HD
    264 BBCAM HD
    271 H2 HD
    273 TVGN HD
    274 OVAT HD
    275 QVC HD
    279 OWN HD
    283 NGWILD HD
    285 ID HD
    289 NASA HD
    294 TheHub HD
    295 SPROUT HD
    313 JTV HD
    328 TVONE HD
    338 gmc HD
    339 Fuse HD
    345 RFD HD
    350 CSPAN HD
    351 CSPAN2 HD
    353 BLOOM HD
    370 EWTN HD
    371 TCC HD
    372 TBN HD
    377 TCT HD

    404 GALA HD
    559 IFC HD
    605 SPRTSM HD
    606 OUTCH HD

I used to list Logo Televison (ch. 272) and Centric (ch. 330); but, apparently, they are not available in HD (despite Dish Network claiming they are as a part of its high def lineup). So, I have removed them from the list. I also don't list Ion Television, because it is broadcast. AT&T U-verse now carries a high-def BYU TV (ch. 374), but it's not on my source's list as available in HD; therefore, I chose not to list it. truTV is italicized because we don't have it yet in HD (but it is supposed to get added in high def either by the end of 2011 or during the first quarter of 2012).

Right now there isn't a cable or satellite provider with a full slate of the nationally available HD "basics" (cable television). Clearly DirecTV opted to maximize carriage of premium movies and, its bread and butter, sports in high definition. It would become satisfying if DirecTV uses its next satellite launch (2013 or 2014) to complete its HD channels lineup.

Just received my new billing, and information for a Free Preview (in November):

    Starz (chs. 525–542): 11.23–11.27
"Watch the premiere of Gnomeo and Juliet on 11.26."

(So, this covers the Encore channels as well.)

Sometimes I really hate that I didn't stick with Comcast. They have BBCA DIY E Cooking Channel & National Geographic Wild in HD. But when Direct TV ofered me a free HD DVR I jumped without thinking.

Have you called Comcast to see if they'll pay your early termination fee provided you return to them? If you are miserable with D* it's worth a shot.

Of the channels you listed, Comcast only carries E in my DMA (H2 in HD is unavailable as well).

Out of all the remaining SD channels, DIY is the only one a seldom watch that I would like to see in HD.

I think it would be very difficult for me to go back to those itty-bitty Comcast harddrives with no external capability.

Tom Robertson, when will the HD guessing games resume? Like Bart Scott would say, I "CAN'T WAIT":)

Speaking of Tom and anticipation, slightly off-topic, I'm anticipating a great early T-DAY Packers at Lions game, followed by a Miami at Dallas dud, but then followed by a great SF at Bal! I'd dare to say that, at the present time and that my G-men are completely unpredictable this year, the Packers at Leos is THE HD event I'm looking forward to this quarter!

So, you are, to coin a phrase, "ready for some football?"!! Me, too. My Niners played the best game they've done in ten years. Hope it wasn't too good to be true as an indicator for future games. ....

    Meanwhile, BBCA, please!

Most of their stuff seems letterboxed. The channel premiered this year. It's safe to say any new programming produced for the channel is up-to-date to an at least 4 year old standard for filming programming.

In asking for BBCA HD I cannot make a friendly comment? Seems a bit harsh.

I was talking about the football chat. BTW, "Are you ready for some football"? is copyrighted to Hank Williams Jr who was fired from ESPN so they can't use it any more.

    Anticipate away...

I wish I knew. :) I can wait, yet I'd rather be leading another round of Guess the HD. :D

I will start the game as soon as I am permitted. I might post a warning for people to get plenty of brain rest before the game actually starts. :)

Speaking of games, tfederov, a very passionate Lions fan, is in town for a few days. Over dinner tonight, we enjoyed discussing the TurkeyDay game, and the NFC championship games. I'm looking for two 10-0 teams to enter Ford Field and the Packers to emerge victorious. :)

I was asked, "aren't you scared?". "No, but I do have a healthy respect for what the Lions have done." :)

Good thing most people already have Fox in HD... :D

    Cheers,
    Tom

Speaking of which, can we anticipate that Fox Sports will one day bring their HD broadcasts up to snuff?

Is there anything we can do besides writing Fox, and maybe the NFL and NHL, who both have a vested interest in how their "shows" look in households?
