Uh, ever consider the locals would love to be able to sell different commercials to different people on the same channel? That’s the entire point! I understood that to be one of the main goals so that local stations could sell time to multiple politicians based on the demo they wanted to be seen by.

That doesn't change the math I posted, which was ALL political advertising on cable networks.

Its about time. Still many more to come.

In glorious SD. What’s the use of adding a new channel if its in SD? All new channels added should be in HD only.

And I’m getting channel not available on 603. What package do you need to get it?

It also doesn't change the law. But even without the legal restrictions, local stations would not want their ad inventory covered by satellite/cable operators.

The cable channel inserts are designed to be filled by cable/satellite operators. The commercials aired by the channel during those specific breaks are intended to be covered. Whether they are covered at the head end with a commercial that reaches all subscribers or at the DVR with a commercial that reaches one subscriber, the commercial you are not seeing isn't sold as reaching all viewers.

The local stations can make more money airing commercials to all of their viewers than trying to target specific viewers. No "junk spots" sold knowing they would be covered by more targeted spots to specific viewers. And as far as political spots, both sides are usually targeting the same viewers ... voters who would change their vote if convinced. And if their commercial is also seen by voters who would never vote for or against the candidate/issue being promoted it isn't a big problem. Certainly not a problem worth changing the law or finding a way to skirt the law to "solve".

I see all the new HD channels except for GAC. When I go to settings and try to hide SD duplicates and go back to the guide GAC disappears completely. I have an HR 54 and have the Ultimate package. Are people seeing GAC HD ?

Yes I am seeing GACHD and so is my mother. However it is grayed out in the guide. Didn't try hiding SD duplicates since it is grayed out.

I that that was for must-carry, and they could do whatever they agreed to for retransmission consent?

Each SYSTEM shows different ads. Comcast Groton and Comcast Branford have totally different local injection ads. Comcast alone has a whole bunch of different systems, like Danbury, Seymour, New Haven, Hartford, Branford, Plainville, Vernon, Old Lyme, Clinton, Groton, etc.

The cowboy channel? What will they come up with next? I'm hoping that cord cutting causes a serious purge of these marginal channels, and leaves far fewer channels in a stronger position in the future. Based on their Wikipedia page and website, I'm also not sure that they broadcast in HD at all.

I thought so too, but someone posted that it is available in HD on Spectrum. It took over the transponder space (and maybe some existing contracts?) of FamilyNet...another channel I've never heard of.

"FamilyNet" lived from 1988 until last year's name change to The Cowboy Channel. It was a primarily religious channel from the launch (as National Christian Network) in 1979 until 2010 when they began airing more "family friendly" programming than strictly religious content. RFD-TV purchased the channel in 2012 and it has been "family friendly" programming ever since (including family friendly programs for rural people).

When it was non-commercial it was carried by DISH as a Public Interest channel (if I recall correctly). Since becoming a commercial channel they now pay for carriage outside of the P/I structure. (RFD-TV was once carried as a P/I until they lost that status by airing commercial programming.)

Cowboy Channel is just a rebrand of FamilyNet, and as mentioned in my post earlier in this thread about what's available to add, it has a HD feed:
(This quarter's list was made before DirecTV added it)

FamilyNet was a classic TV and religious net that has been around in some form since 1979 (it didn't get the FamilyNet name until 1988) and had a mix of OTA, sat and cable carriage as well as FiOS and U-Verse. (i.e. in the Philly DMA WBPH carried a lot of FamilyNet's religious programming) RFD-TV's parent company purchased it back in 2012 and merged it with their other channel Rural TV in 2013. With the rebrand to Cowboy Channel this summer they dropped their remaining OTA affiliates. They're also adding some more providers in the new year like Altice USA/Optimum.

As for programming it's mostly rodeo and other western sports and some classic western shows like Roy Rogers and the Lone Ranger.

Being that the channel is available only in the Unlimited package it should be available in HD. If its available in HD it should be added in HD. All new channels added going forward should be HD only.

The Roy Rogers, Gunsmoke and other old western TV shows are SD so it doesn't matter except for rodeo coverage (and even then it only matters if they are producing and uplinking them in HD)

If they got rid of all the niche channels our prices would go up even higher.. because then the big guys would have zero competition.

A small channel such as this, who cares if it’s Hi Definition or SD if all their content is really only in SD anyway. It’s channels like this that I suspect will go Hi Definition in the system when DIRECTV says that all customers could receiver the channel if it’s in Hi Definition. Till then, especially if they have to pay to be on, they will pay the lowest amonut that makes them available to the most people. And SD is available to more people right now.

The Cowboy Channel isn't paying to be on the lineup.

Back before Rural Media purchased them and they were mostly a religious channel they were making deals where they pay similar to INSP, but ever since the merger with Rural TV they come as part of the renewal with RFD-TV.

As for HD carriage, they probably care more about saying they now have nationwide DirecTV carriage than they care about having HD carriage. Outside of Spectrum and some smaller providers almost no one else has them in HD. Even many of their current cable deals are mostly regional and not nationwide. (i.e. Cox in Vegas and Providence doesn't have them at all, while Cox in Oklahoma City only carries them in SD)

Oh ok, fair enough, it's not in HD on satellite, cable must carry it in HD regionally. DirecTV really should carry it in HD. Some of the rural-focused channels not in HD are baffling, as that's a strong market for DBS.
