Guess that depend on who you ask, what one considers "basic national HD", and what really matters to be viewed by the majority of viewers. ;)

Only if the source is good. ;)

Sad to say, Netflix SD via my Apple TV blows DIRECTV SD out of the water. Now that is pitiful. :nono2:

Not when it comes to "basic". Even Hoosier205's HD chart agrees with this fact. :D

Last time I watched SD, it was an episode of Happy Days back in 1979.

SD in the year 2010 is a joke!

With that said, I think I'll go listen to my Walkman and play a game of Pong on my TV.

HD Robin Meade would rock, but SD Robin Meade is better than no Robin Meade at all!

Well, I am Old and you will be too one day if you Live Long Enough and don't make too many mistakes that young people are doing nowadays.

News informs me of what is going on in the world but then again you probably don't care about those things.

After suffering thru the 3Q and 4Q threads, I'm actually looking forward to the 1Q thread, as I think there will be more pleasure than pain --certainly compared to 3/4Q anyway.

Unless D* decides to make a major announcement late in 4Q even if it actually gets implemented in 1Q.

The local cable provider's analog is cleaner than DirecTV's SD. Especially their ClearQAM. DirecTV doesn't offer AMC in HD, but AMC in SD looks better on Cable using QAM Channel 34-5307. There's 9 SD programs on that frequency, which is 38.8mbps, so thats 4.31mbps for each channel if its CBR. Unfortunately I can't get cable's HD stuff unless I get a box, and pay for a digital package, so no sense in doing that. Hopefully DirecTV comes through one of these days.

Since Directv is still broadcasting large numbers of channels in SD, does that make the Directv service a joke?

But has it really been difficult to add channels? The latest battles have all been about keeping channels that service providers already carry. All of which, Disney, Fox, Scripps, include channels that DirecTV already carries. The channel that DirecTV recently dropped, G4, is a channel that exists elsewhere in HD but DirecTV only carried in SD. And whereas the other channel losses (Dish with Fox and Disney; AT&T with Scripps) have resulted with those service providers publicly wanting to have those channels back and, so far, 2 out of 3, they've succeeded. DirecTV response was essentially been that they don't care about the channel.

Looking at it from the other end, when Fox Reality became NGW essentially every service provider began to carry NGW in HD when they began to carry it in SD. DirecTV didn't. On the proactive front, Dish Network went out and got the Cooking Channel in HD. DirecTV didn't.

Based on actual observation, it's difficult for me to find a more rational conclusion than that the most likely reason DirecTV doesn't add more true national channels in HD is that they aren't very interested in adding those channels.

It's very easy to show why this comment is utter nonsense. Look how many pages these HD Anticipation threads go. They dwarf every other thread and the posts are essentially negative in sense that DirecTV isn't carrying channels other providers have and they are being made by DirecTV subscribers.

A long time ago, most of us concluded the content of the channels provided matter more than counting every channel that might be called HD. DirecTV themselves started it early when they put up DishNetwork's Voom channels to ridicule as channels you've never heard of. Now, DirecTV excludes about 35 channels that the above poster calls HD channels because even when promoting themselves as the HD Leader they feel the content isn't worthy of being included as an HD channel.

None of this points to DirecTV winning by ease. It points to a willfully delusional single poster.

Good question. For DirecTV it definitely seems to have been quite difficult for a while now compared to other providers. For whatever reason we want to speculate (since no one here except maybe satelliteracer knows for certain), they can't seem to get it done. It's definitely not lack of bandwidth :)
