I'm sure part of the reason is because they don't sell SD TVs anymore. I lost a 32" CRT TV a few months back and was not able to replace it. I had to buy a 32" HD TV. Walmart had one CRT listed, a 27" but it said "unavailable".
Every one buying a TV now is buying HD but not necessarily by choice.

Absolutely! SD channels look great on an SD TV. I have two big screen HD TVs in my TV room but I love TCM ,among others, and it just doesn't look good on them. Now if Directv had it in HD then I wouldn't need to have an SD set.

I mostly lurk, but I try to check this thread often in hopes of seeing another channel or two being announced and rolled out. There are almost 100 pages...

Can someone post any updates or info as far as any new HD channels being added? Or is it more likely that anything further will added be next year?

    Thanks.

The Dish [w/ Danielle Fishel], on Style, is Now in HD as well. I THINK tyrok said they share the same studio.

SD will look fine on a 32 inch HD TV unless you are sitting right on top of it. And then even an SD set will not look great.

TCM is very watchable on DirecTV. Just watched two movies this morning.

I bought one of those in 1983. It lasted until 1999. Then I bought a Magnavox which just lasted until 2007 vertical hold broke. I bought a SHARP AQAUS 37" LCD set.

Depends on the quality of the set, the SD channel you are tuned to (D* loves to bit starve most SD channels), and your definition of "Fine". If "Fine" means as good as an SD set, you are sorely mistaken, unless said SD set is a complete piece of garbage.

Let me challenge you. Turn on the Chiller Channel (yes, I know it isn't available in HD yet) and watch the wonders of a bit starved channel. If you still think the picture is "Fine", then the majority of us know you come with a completely different set of standards than the average viewing public.

    ...- .....
There are likely to be some added, but what they are and when they will be added is anyones guess.

Chiller is one of the worst SD channels anyone in my house ever watches. I don't watch it, but other family members sometimes do, and it truly is terrible.

So I wonder if we'll see anything new (rumored packages?) on the 17th?

I would think so and I sure hope so as the offerings of late have been Slim and None and Slim just left town.

Sorry. You are comparing what you are seeing on your huge TV with what you would see on a 32 inch TV. It will be watchable on a 32 inch TV.

As for the average viewing public....they don't even know if they are watching HD or SD.

Watch a crappy SD channel and you get crappy SD...even on an SD set.

I talked to a guy who had a very expensive RV (over $800,000) and he thought he had HD on all of his TVs but I proved him wrong as he didn't have the latest Dish such as Motosat to acquire the New MPEG-4 HD Sats and he was watching MPEG-2 stuff which the HD had gone away so all he had left was SD and he couldn't believe it until he called Directv and they Verified what I had said that he would have to have a Dish that was capable of locking onto Sats 99 and 103 to get the New MPEG-4 Satellite HD Channels.

If SD were broadcast in 480p instead of 480i there would be a noticeable improvement in picture quality. Short of that happening calibrate your TV to improve picture quality.

Watchable just means that it can be watched, not that it looks good. I am watching it on a 32" Sony and it is watchable. I could not watch it on a big screen though. The original point I was trying to make is that if you set out to buy a new TV it will be HD because that's all there is. It wasn't an assault on Directv, that only came up when you questioned my wanting a nice cheap SD TV to watch my SD shows on.

Maybe someone with more knowledge and time can put together a list of the outstanding channels with the channel owner. I think it might be interesting and telling to see how many of our favorite missing channels are owned by the same company.

True enough. I had to tell a friend he was watching SD on an HD set last New Year's. I could easily tell from the poor picture and the fat football players. Of course he was using Time Warner Cable, where channel 7 was SD and channel 507 was HD.
