DirecTV HD DVR upgrade - save $100 for real!

    I hate for this to be my first post here! I've been lurking around this site for several months. I never really felt the need to post because I never really thought I had anything of substance to contribute but I just hate to bite on this.

    Big_Novak, I hope your happy with your deal. Your not the first to do that but not the last.

    Let me relate a little story. When I first upgraded to Vista, I had some issues with Gametap. I called the tech support line and because I was extremely pleasant(he had been getting nasty phone calls all day due to the Vista incompatibility.) he gave me 2 free months of the service and he emailed me back a week later to see how things were faring with the install.

    I learned a long time ago that if you talk to the customer service people, just chat while they are helping you, they will give you things WITHOUT you even asking. Just freakin be nice is all that you really need to do.

    Maybe it's because I myself work in the customer service industry that I have a little more respect for the people working on the other end on the phone and even though i've gone off on Comcast a few times(they are the only company that really tries my patience) I know that if you are pleasant, nice, and don't act like they owe you something that you will be pleasantly suprised with the results.

    I now go back to my lurking. :)

    that actually happened to a freind of mine who had directv and wanted an upgrade.She called and said she was going to cancel. They basically said ok..so she did. Now she is locked in a 2 year agreement with Dish network and regrets it.

    Welcome to the forum.

    So I got my HR20 in 10/06 and I still cannot get an offer on the web to get another HR20. I only see the following offers...

    I have had D* for a VERY long time. The only place you could buy D* at was at Radio Shack back then or directly from them.

    you think the $70 is allprofit? hah! If you buy a TV from a store for $300, do you think they just made $300 off you? No.

    if you're paying $70, they probably make $20 off you, or less. the extra $100's going to take them half a year to recoup.
    costs about $1000. Shop around for a TIVO 2-tuner hd-dvr. (without commitment) ask TIVO how to get one for $299

    extra profit...extra discount. Potato/potato. every company lives by the silly CEO bible verse that it's easier to keep a customer than gain one...ao work extra hard to gain one...your credit card company likely hooked you in with a 0% apr... if they offer a 0% apr to new customers...do you insist on the same deal or you'll cancel?

    Unfortunately, competition costs. It costs the companies plenty. If it weren't for competition, pay-tv prices would probably be about the same, but they would be considered gouging, because the company involved would be making money hand-over-fist.

    Think about switching 3 times...each time the company sends a contractor out, for 100-500 bucks, to install the new system. that's $900 that could have been spent on something else...or tossed in the company coffers.

    Part of why E* and later D* went to lease is that the "free" equipment was a huge money sink, because customers would generally toss the boxes in the attic or trash...to the tune of about $200.

    the other part is obcsure, but federal laws now prohibit selling something for less than the manufacture cost...and those $49 receivers cost $100-$150 to manufacture. The HR20 is about a grand..probably closer to $800.

    Since technology moves, and the boxes are likely obsolete in 4 years, $299 isn't unreasonable, since 4 years from now you may be threatening to cancel if you don't get the new 8-tuner, 4-room total-home 1080p system at a discount.(theroretical)

    Hmmm Interesting since D* just extended ther service contract with Tivo. You complain about the lease you could of bought it for $849 and owned it. Stop complaining. There are always options. It's not like you pay a monthly lease fee for it.

    And this kind of crap happens all the time. Threaten to cancel until you get what you want. Now, you can't haggle at WalMart for a $299 stereo, can you?

    The whole old vs new customer is really getting tiring; when they expect a 2 year commitment out of me, I am not just going to give it free of charge, In 2 years time they stand to make roughly $2400 out of me; I guess I asked for too much when I asked for the HD DVR free of charge (again as mentioned earlier) a lease. I was very professional and polite, but I am fully prepared to leave D* for E* if being a loyal customer since the service went online in our area doesn't mean anything to them. In this case it was not a threat, E* has a very good offer now and since they must stay competitive with D* I feel the change of providers might be fun. I could probably play CSR roulette and get a better offer, but I have better things to do than spend hours on the phone, getting a new offer each and every time. It would be nice if they actually did have a set policy with regard to upgrading existing customers. Another thing to keep in perspective; D* may end up having more HD channels (a short term advantage most likely), but of that lineup I only saw a few items that appealed to me. I am not going to make a big deal out of leaving D* for E*, like others have, just saying my $.02...

    guess what??? it is available to eligible customers without haggling or threatening to cancel, when the csr answered your call,she/he probably just immediately told you the standard lease price 299.00 , then when she pulled up our ordering system, she more than likely saw the 100.00 instant rebate offer that was avail to you,,it's just a co-incidence that you mentioned (probably simutaneously) that you wanted to cancel your account,

    the 199.00 price for new customers is with the 100.00 instant rebate so existing customers (eligible ones , that is) do get the same offers as new customers

    Sorry, just saw the thread tonight..honestly this happens all of the time on several of the other boards I frequent, someone sees a post, doesn't read through all of the thread and they reply..that is what I did, but I am done now :)

    However, that said, a forum is for open communications and just because someone doesn't like hearing the same thing over and over, I am glad to see this thread was not closed. We always have the choice to "not" read the thread; as a new member I appreciate that :0

    Your free to read/post, but the "downside" is that if someone has posted in this thread and it comes back to the top of the forum, there is a icon that shows you've posted in it and so normally one needs to read it to see if someone is replying to your posting.
    Of course in this case it's just a very dead thread. [never mind] :lol: .

    No harm. And if a thread is closed, it is still there to be read, you just can't reply to it. The whole "I got this deal" issue is lind of a hot button here because there are people who can't get the same deals. And deals can change in the course of three or four months where the same deals aren't even offered anymore sometimes.

    2 things:

    1. To close this thread (or any others) based on "this thread needs to die" or any other reason (other than violating the rules of the forum) is just plain old censorship. That's something we pride ourselves with in this country.

    2. I would love to have CSR's call the bluff of all these "I'm gonna cancel" threats.
