Is there any discussion on DBSTalk about the DirecTV internet service? My DSL line is giving me fits, and I think it may be time to think about satellite internet. Where would I find this discussion?

Thanks!

Not sure what kind of marketing you are referring to. Here in NY we have a set of islands that used to be served by Verizon DSL until Sandy destroyed their infrastructure there, they have decided to "let it go" and provide a wireless option instead for phone and internet. HugesNet have made a killing over there with their advertisements "all over the place" (ferry, radio, brochures, posters) and exede has done nothing.
That marketting exactly. You have a wireless option or hughesnet. I guess by "no other option" I could've said, "very limited options".

If DSL is too slow for you, switch to AT&T Uverse internet only. I went from 6mbps DSL to 12mbps with Uverse and it does the job I need it to do. I stream Netflix all the time with no problems, and I don't go over the cap. I don't download movies from D*. . UVerse can go as high as 24mbps. The only problem I have with UVerse is that I'm constantly getting bombarded with AT&T offers for Uverse TV, by mail and sometimes email.

But I'm very happy with my 12mbps actual 11.5mbps Uverse internet.

U-verse can also go below 3 MBps; depends on what pipeline there is from a hub. Some is optical, some is POT lines, some are combos.

We both know that's what forums are for, you have your fair share about DirecTv. ;)
Yep but there is nothing but complaints over there.
Most of them about Rain fade, and Data usage.

Easy for you to say, but at my address -- which is within the city of Los Angeles -- AT&T's maximum offering is 1.5MBps DSL, and I know from experience that it actually maxes out at about 700kBps here. My only realistic option for actual high-speed Internet is Time Warner Cable.

Cable is faster and cheaper then Wild Blue.

I can get 50 MBPS for $20 less then Wild blue 15 mbps and have a 500GB per month vs 25 GB

Thanks, guys!

I was just looking into the possibilty, as I could get the bundle price with my DirecTV account.

The data caps would be a problem. Right now I have 6Mb DSL, and no data cap. I've just been having a lot of problems with the line. They are installing the infrastructure for12 Mb in my area, but I am 1.6 miles from the demark box and they tell me that;s too far for 12Mb. I do have access to mediacom cable, but having worked for Turner Broadcasting for years, I don't want anything to do with a cable company ever again. <grin>

They're coming out tomorrow to test my line. Maybe they'll fix it and this will all become moot.

Thanks!

As much as you hate cable internet that is by far a way better option than Exede

Agree with PEDS....

Sateliite Internet Service is last option...... Cable company internet is often bundled if the company in the area is affiliated with Directv bundling. DSL is kinda lousy especially if you are far away from the the main box. Check out some of the 4g internet providers in the area. Some have speeds well above DSL............

Best of Luck,

SIG

The 4G companies down here have really low data caps for a lot more than I'm paying for DSL. They came out today and gave me a new wireless modem, and that has made things better. They claim all the old sagecom 4300 modems are crap and they are swapping them out whenever they come out on a service call. This is Windstream. BTW. The tech also told me they are starting to install the new 12/24 DSL hardware, and they are installing the new system that uses multiple wire pairs to increase the distance you can go with the service. He said in my case I would be able to get 2 6Mb signals on 2 pairs and the new modem would put it back together to make 12Mb, which will work quite a bit further than the distance I am from my subscriber card down the road.

So, things are looking up.

Thanks for listening and for the great advice!

I'm considering the purchase of piece of property that certainly does not have cable service, and while it does have DSL available, the phone company (CenturyLink) has already told me that the BEST they can offer for that address is only 1.5 Mbps. So when they say that's the best they can offer, reality is that it will probably be half that! That leaves satellite internet as my only option. Aside from the data cap issues, which I do understand, are there any other real serious reasons not to consider satellite?

If you like to play online multiplayer games on game consoles, you wont be able to do it with internet satellite due to its latency
