Take the cover off the buttons. It's oval shaped. Then remove the rubber cover and use a contact cleaner on the buttons. Going from memory!

You ordered the remote that will best meet your needs. You just need to get one that isn't defective.

The newer DIRECTV remotes aren't as easy to use or flexible as the RC66RX.

If you have the protection plan, call DirecTV and they’ll send you a free replacement.

I have mostly RC66RX remotes, and about 20 brand new spares! We don’t use the newer ones really at all. In fact, never.

When it comes to DIRECTV remotes it's about "personal preference". But then you're a DISH subscriber with no hands on experience with DIRECTV.

I have never experienced or heard of a brand new Directv remote with buttons that stick. You just got a defective one (or one that somebody's kids spilled something on and was returned to the store, maybe). Return it for a replacement.

If you want a point-anywhere remote that will control Directv via radio frequency (RF) that pretty much limits you to the official ones from Directv, as has been recommended several times already.

If you can be content with a remote that controls via infrared (IR) and must have direct line-of-sight to the receiver, there are any number of universal remotes from different brands with support for Directv that can do the job. Common brands are One for All, RCA, GE, Philips, Harmony, Inteset, and new Chinese manufacturers that are springing up all the time.

    RC66.

Because you have a specific requirement (that the remote be able to control the TV and the DIRECTV receiver without switching modes), the DIRECTV remotes are an easy and inexpensive choice.

Other universal remotes will likely require significant setup on your part.

I hesitate to detail specific models because you haven't shared which DIRECTV receiver you're using nor have you noted the TV brand and model. If there are any other devices to be controlled, knowing those would be helpful too as some remotes don't support devices that use other than infrared.

Logitech Harmony remotes can control all of your equipment without "switching modes".

But they do require some reading comprehension to set up and use.
