I took my Camry in for a checkup. They later ask if I was having trouble starting my car. I said no. he said the battery voltage is down a little. a few days later, the ignition started dragging when I tried to start the car. coincidence??

    And now Directv,

a couple of days ago I wrote Directv an email. I asked how do i remove the protection plan in case I decide to offset the rate increases in Feb. a guy wrote back told me how and said I shouldn't because it covers this and that...

the next day my R15 hard drive bit the dust. coincidence??

My 2 year commitment was over mid 2008. so it has been in service for almost 4 years, I guess it was time for it to crap out.

Coincidence, really. I know they can force-reboot your receiver remotely but as far as killing it... I doubt it.

DirecTV made it rain inside my house one time when I was late with a payment - Needless to say, I signed up for Auto-Pay the next day.

The average life of a DVR seems to be right around 4-5 years.

Which is likely because the average life of a hard drive is 4-5 years.

So did you remove the protection plan and then the reciver when bad or are you covered and you got a new and better reciever for free, and if you got it for free what is the problem?

They COULD do it for an ENTIRE model of receivers (Software), but don't see how they could do it to one specific receiver.

They could turn the receiver off. I don't see how they could actually "Kill" the receiver.

Google up using the terms "smartcard" and "ECM" and possibly "Directv" . . . several times over the years, Directv has killed smartcards (the access cards) remotely to fight signal piracy.

I don't know enough about it say much more, and doing so would probably violate the DBSTalk TOS. But it's been done before and probably could be done again.

The event was called Black Sunday, since it happened on Super Bowl Sunday. The coverage of it on technology sites is actually what got me interested in satellite TV in the first place.

But even then, the receiver could be reactivated with a new card right?
