Since the DirecTV account overview page no longer recognizes how long you've been a customer or points out special offers just for you, I've taken to periodically adding (and then deleting) equipment just to see what's offered. Until today the up front cost of a "new" HD DVR has been $199 plus $49 for installation...a total cost of $248. Today the total cost is $49. Not going to bite but interesting information anyway. ;)

Spurred on by your post, I went to my account page to see if the same would happen to me. I had a notice that as a result of a loyal customer offer I would qualify for a free HD DVR. The unit and installation would be free, all I would be responsible for would be the S&H fee.

(Not that it'll do me much good, been trying to cut down, turned off 3 boxes and gave one away recently, down to 10 tuners)

I got free HD upgrade as well. Replaced my H21 and my HR20 for two HR24s, SWM Dish, Internet/Cinema Connection kit, and whole home service for $49. Of course I have another 24 month commitment and an additional $3/month for MRV.

This was on top of my 24 months extension of free HD, 12 months of $10 off my base package, and 12 months of free HD extra package.

    I got:
HD DVR upgrade (HR24), replaced my HD receiver (now have 3 hd dvrs)
cinema connection kit for all 3 receivers. (seems to work much better than the lan connected setup I had for all 3 before).
    No install fee.

    New charges:
Whole home for $3 a month

    New Discounts:
    NFL 2012 package free
$20 a month choice ultimate discount for 12 months

    2 year commitment..

    I am happy! :D

I have that offer too. It doesn't say whether you have to send one of your current boxes back, or if this receiver is an addition to your current equipment. In my case I have an HR24, an H21 and an H23. Would I need to send the 21 or 23 back, or would this be added to that setup? It did not offer installation, just a shipping fee.

I was able to send back a regular receiver, and sub in the DVR.. Im not sure they will guarantee you the HR24 upgrade, though the guy who did my install said that they pretty much only install the HR24 for the last few weeks.

I actually want another DVR and I keep seeing the same $99 upgrade that I always see.

I always thought I had to add equipment to my cart to see the special offers as well. Then I found that all you have to do is log in your account and go to the receiver page in this [link]. It will show you any special offers for each of the receivers. I had the free HD DVR offer on my account a few months ago and with a call to retention, ended up turning that into an HR34 with WHDVR for free instead.
