The nation's largest satellite TV provider is moving out of the living room and out on the road. After months-long testing, DIRECTV unveiled plans to make some of its high-definition channels available to a select few hotels across the country.

According to reports, DIRECTV has launched a new service that makes its HD channels available to a number of hotels which have upgraded rooms to accommodate high-def TV sets. The satellite TV company addressed the move with industry press after Hilton Hotels announced this week that DIRECTV's nine national HDTV channels would be available in certain rooms at its luxury locations in San Francisco and Chicago.

The remodeled Hilton rooms are being called "Sight & Sound" rooms - fully equipped with a 42-inch plasma TV. The rooms offer 40 DIRECTV channels which include the nine HDs, plus on-demand programming from ABC and digital surround sound systems.

DIRECTV said it would begin to aggressively market its high-def services to the hospitality industry as the company gets closer to its goal of 100 national HD channels by the end of 2007. The company said some of its local high-def signals will be offered in some hotels, as well.
