So, I had DirecTV out to install new service Saturday. During our discussions he mentioned (a few times) that sometime this Fall I would be getting a firmware update to the HR54-500 that would give it 13 tuners? I mentioned this over at Satellite Guys and no one had heard any such thing. Does anyone here know what the technician was talking about?

If he put up a reverse band lnb you should already have 13 tuners

No..... he misunderstands what he’s being told I believe. I believe they will only be installing lnbs that can handle up to 13 tuners by this fall...

Good advice, why anyone listens (and believes) to installers or CSRs is beyond me.

Not possible. The hardware inside supports only 8 tuners. With one dedicated to the SWM guide channel that leaves 7 actual tuners. Because of the way Directv plans to handle 4K channels when they move it to reverse band, two have been reserved which leaves you a maximum of 5 tuners available. A firmware patch could no more give the HR54 13 tuners than a patch could make it output 4K....it is a physical impossibility.

Probably he was told something that got lost in translation and it had to do with the reverse band LNB as suggested above. With a small chance he meant the HS17 will get a firmware patch that gives it 13 tuners (it has 16 physical tuners) though I think we would have heard some rumors from the CE testers if that was the case.

I'll try this and see what it says later tonight.

Thanks for all the info everyone. I knew obviously you can't receive physical tuners with a software download. The first thought I had after hearing this was how DISH Network is able to record 5 channels with one tuner with their Prime Time Live feature. I assumed there was a way to turn 5 into 13, lol, that was just wishful thinking I guess!

5 and more channels must be on ONE transponder, eg on one tuner

The physical tuners in the LNB or receiver only provide an upper limit, not a lower limit. Otherwise all 3D2 and 3DR/5DR LNBs would offer 23 tuners, the DSWM30 would be the DSWM46, and so forth...

The DISH feature allows recording of 4 specific channels with one tuner. The four channels are each market's in market locals for ABC, CBS, Fox and NBC - which DISH has conveniently placed on the same transponder in each market. The feature works 24 hours a day (for example one tuner can record all four channels for their morning shows or late night programming) but only for those four channels - not for any other channels on the system or even other locals on that transponder.

DISH advertised "record up to six channels at the same time" for the Hoppers counting the four major locals and any two other channels (on the other two tuners of the three tuner Hopper). The limit would be three channels if one was not recording two or more major local channels.

DIRECTV uses individual tuners for each channel tuned. A five tuner receiver has five tuners and can record (or watch live) five channels. There are no special tricks to make it five or more than five. Just one tuner per channel tuned.

Unless DIRECTV has hidden a much larger tuner in the HR54 than anyone has been told there is no way it can receive 13 transponders. Either the tech was misunderstood or was mistaken.

If you mean your HR54 will be getting 13 tuners, no it won't, it only has 5 tuners built in.

No, it actually has eight, with one reserved for the SWM guide channel. There are two that are reserved for future use of 4K. Some of the beta models even had a 'SWM-7' label on them.

So just for the heck of it I went to the settings and it says:
    DISH TYPE: SL3 LNB
    SWITCH TYPE: SWM LNB
    RB/INTL: NONE SELECTED
    SWM CH COUNT:13
    MANUFACTURER: WNC

So you got 3D2 LNBF, check a green label on it; the LNBF capable support 13 separate tuners for all your STBs total.

That should actually be a 1st gen. digital LNB the "3D1" if it reads 13 tuners in the settings.

The 2nd gen. 3D2(RB), Reverse Band and non-Reverse Band models, both display 22 tuners (as does the 5D2RB).

For some reason with the 1st gen. model the receivers do not include the network tuner in the count whereas for the 2nd gen. models they do.
